It doesn't work for me because my analog headsets are too weak for my computer to pick up. I've heard that USB headsets don't have this problem. We supposedly have one in the garage; have yet to dig it out.

I have a standard analog Logitech headset/mic combo and it works fine.
I've been told two things to troubleshoot voice problems:
1) make sure your headset is plugged in before you power up. What this does...I'm not sure...a Linden told me this in-world.
2) if your dot isn't there, or voice isn't working--disable voice in preferences, apply, OK and close...then re-open, enable, apply, and OK...and then wait...sometimes this works.
Good luck.
ps. I'm not sure the structure of this POLL is conducive to an accurate outcome.

Well, without adding special hardware, my Mac Mini can't support voice at all, no matter what they do. The Mac Mini has no sound input circuitry. I would have to connect an external sound module $200 USD or more) to be capable of making a single peep in SL. Let alone the cost of a headset.
I did try connecting an analog mic and speakers to a borrowed sound input adapter, and ran into what one of the previous posters indicated. I had to scream into the mike to get the input to be detected at all. And I really wasn'y interested in blowing $30 to $80 USD for a headset that I don't really want to use anyway.
Happily, the only reason I was really interested in Voice was to see how much those of us who would never use it would be impacted by the changes they were making. So the fact that it doesn't work with my hardware isn't an issue for me.
The oversized Chatterbox is only the least bit usable if I hack the xml code for the User Interface and change their insane 240 pixel minimum dialog height to a more reasonable 72 pixels. Hopefully they will fix the Chatterbox, but I am not holding my breath.

OK... I get the white dot but voice is borked on my main computer. I have a Trust USB headset that works just fine and dandy with Skype. However voice works just fine on my laptop. Thing is I don't use my laptop for SL as I find the dinky keyboard kinda irritating. Hardware issues? Possibly .... my main computer has 3 soundcards: A Marian Marc-8 for studio work, the onboard lame-ass audio chip that I route SL sounds, Windoze sounds and stuff like Windoze Media Player through and the USB headset. This configuration works fine for everything else.... even Cubase (normally a finicky biotch of a program) hums along nicely. My laptop (Dell Inspiron) has the onboard SigmaTel audio chip (whatever that is) as well as an M-Audio Firewire box hanging off the side [I use my laptop to run my backing tracks for gigs and stuff like that]. Maybe it's a routing problem? I just can't tell... i've been over this machine with a tooth-comb and I've just given up on voice for the time being For what it's worth the configuration applet won't recognise any of the buttons on my Microsoft USB optical mouse. So.... I have CTL as the trigger for PTT but even then nothing shows up in the volume widget.

From: Michael Bigwig 1) make sure your headset is plugged in before you power up. What this does...I'm not sure...a Linden told me this in-world. It's a good tip as far as USB headsets are concerned. Many applications (including SL) will output to the default soundcard if the USB headset is disconnected. SL won't detect the hardware change if you plug-in the headset _after_ it has been launched either, so it's best to (i) plug-in the headset (ii) then launch Second Life.

I have also did this, even made sure the headset was in, reboot system, then connected to SL.. still no go.. I dont even get the white dot over my head. I am running two systems, both with different clients of SL running, neither system will pick up voice.

some steps that might help, collated thru experience: - update sound drivers (no kidding) - if no white dot, or the connection to voice server message, goto to preferences to disable and enable again, then use the wizard to setup - find someone with voice working to test - make sure the volume of the headset/speakers is on and not muted - make sure mic is not muted - some have to up the volume quite high in order to hear - remember to press the push-to-talk key (whatever u have set it to) and talk, usually that is the scroller of the mouse - the green waves ((( O ))) indicated that you are talking or making some noises
