EFF cofounder John Gilmore is famous for his quote: "The Internet treats censorship as though it were a malfunction and routes around it." Will forum posters treat Resident Answers as the new General forum and post whatever they want here, flowing around censorship, and poor design, like water in a stream? Have you ever watched people avoid lengthy, poorly laid sidewalks and instead cut across the shorter distance of the grass? Could an argument be made that any post in Resident Answers is implicitly seeking the answer to the question: "Can someone please provide me with a General forum where I can post any topic?" Will general posts in Resident Answers reach their audience before moderators can move the post? Will moderators be pointlessly chasing ripples in a pond, unable to ever catch their elusive prey? Grasshopper, my heart is gladdened to believe it so. I'm gladdened not by malice or revenge, but simply by watching human desire following its true, eternal course.

From: paulie Femto Have you ever watched people avoid lengthy, poorly laid sidewalks and instead cut across the shorter distance of the grass? Those paths worn in the grass that show where people walk are referred to by a wonderful term: desire lines. Now we have virtual desire lines - I love it.

"The Buddha, the Godhead, resides quite as comfortably in the circuits of a digital computer or the gears of a cycle transmission as he does at the top of a mountain or in the petals of a flower." -Robert M. Pirsig. "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" Yes, we know it to be true. As above, so below, eh? Human desire persists. Across all technologies and realms of time and space, human desire persists.

EWGA, you're an "after the post editor." I know the feeling. I do it myself. I was responding to your original post which stated that the Lindens would probably bring down the ban hammer if this forum descended into chaos. I was going to respond that this forum didnt have to descend into chaos. I was saying that, this time, we could enjoy harmony instead. And before I could finish that thought, you edited your post to harmonious: "." It's hard for me to describe how strangely wonderful I felt upon seeing that quiet meditation in your post. Buddha rests here. Have you heard the parable about barbarians invading a Monastery? One monk sat serenely in the courtyard, ignoring the invasion. A barbarian accosted the Monk, saying, "Dont you understand that I could KILL YOU?!" The Monk replied, "Dont you understand that you could NOT kill me?"

He's an alt I use for accounting purposes and I frequently forget I'm logged in as him.... but I reiterate...I think that LL will bring down the hammer if we aren't harmonious. So let's be harmonious!

I belong to another online community with threaded BBs, there we all have an interest in the world markets as we all either trade and/or invest. It’s un-moderated and a free for all but we have kept it going since 2001 odd by learning not to respond to the Troll.
Its a busy site too, like Linden en-mass but I am hopeful the same techniques can apply here
I also listened to Gov Lindens pod cast and a comment by Lewis Nerd about the passing of some forums. From what I can understand Linden Lab employees have to read all these posts and it must be a thankless task (I agree with Gov Linden) when you get destructive rather than constructive people.
I think honest criticism is okay – but I have also learned you usually achieve more by negotiations rather than confrontation

I've always believed that one should engage in confrontation first before anything else. Only when you know you have gained an upper hand, should you then decide on negotiations. If you know you can't win, there is no point in negotiations. In such a situation, there is nothing to discuss either.

If you treat this like the "New General" forum, then we will no longer have this forum.
So let's keep it to its intended purpose.
