Hi All

I am interested in learning a little more about all things Neko - could someone point me in the right direction on where to find the info.

TIA

BB :)

Well, are you looking for info on what they are, the culture around them, or where to buy neko gear?

I'm not the most informed on nekos, but I'll give it a go.

Neko, originally, is the Japanese word for cat. In English usage it is generally applied to humans who have cat ears, tail, and possibly other features. They show up in anime and manga, and tend to have cat-like personalities. They're often the personification of innocence and sexuality, although this depends on who's writing/drawing/controlling them.

In RL the culture surrounding them would be the otaku culture, with maybe a few non-otakus thrown in. Otaku is of course the word applied to someone obsessed with anime or manga, and can sometimes be taken as an insult in Japan, but not very often in America.

They're very popular in role-playing communities, and are often played as highly sexual characters. They're not quite furries, but not quite human either. My understanding is that they aren't covered by fur, except on the tail and ears (and possibly paws, if they have them).

And that brings me to the end of my limited knowledge of nekos. Hope I could have at least been a basic help. For more information you might want to hunt down one of the anime based Sims, and find a neko there.

Try this. It's a lot more involved than I thought. Interesting.

Maneki Neko are very widespread throughout Southeast Asia. Certainly, in Thailand almost every small shop hes at least one, usually white (silver) or gold, and usually left handed! Modern ones are often / usually plastic, and have a battery operated arm which makes a beckoning motion (Thais beckon by holding out their arm and moving the hand downwards, the opposite of westerners). There are even Maneki Neko available for sale in SL.

I don't think there is any connection between anime neko culture and the Maneki Neko, although Hello Kitty definitely decends from them.

Barrowness,

I'm not sure about anime sims per se, but I do know that there are many sims dedicated to furries, which are animal avatars. I've seen lots of nekos hanging around with full furries; don't know if there are sims for just nekos. Knowing SL I'm sure there are. Search in places for neko, although you'll probably end up with a gajillion hits.

Neko kawaii!!! At least real cats. Human avatars with cat ears can look cute too, but that doesn't depend on the ears.

I don't know much about Neko "culture" but I did attend a building class that taught me how to build Neko ears and a tail and I've been wearing them ever since. They're kinda fun.

Places like wasteland and midian have a high neko content but they are not 100% neko.

For what it's worth I am Kitsune (fox), not neko (cat), although my last partner was neko. My current partner is a mouse.

For me it's a reflection of my personality not a fashion accessory.

The Kitsunes have multiple tails right? Can you explain why?

Up to 9 tails unless you are the Empress who has 1,000.

Some say a sign of rank, these people say a tail can be awarded or removed for deeds and actions or death.

Others say a sign of age, one tail for every 100 years of age.

I have chosen a mix, I am 213 years old and have 2 tails, I should have three but lost one as I died. I am a spirit kitsune.

Either way the depiction goes back centuries.

http://www.comnet.ca/~foxtrot/kitsune/kitsune8.htm has some good information.
