Why do people pay $3000 or what have you on an island at auction when you can get one for $1675 plus $30 reservation fee?
Is there something I am not understanding?

The people who are in the business of over-paying for a mainland sim don't do this with the intention of keeping it to themselves. They buy these sims as business investment. They generally, break-up the sims into parcels and resell them at a profit. You can't do this with a private island. Another difference is tier. Tier for a private island is $295/month while it's $195/month for a mainland sim.

Actually, I have seen people make a profit on the private island parcels....They order an island, parcel it up, sell them (not outright), collect the tier....In essence, private island owners own the Estate, while the people who buy their parcels are the land owners, but pay tier to the Estate Owner, not Linden Labs. That being said, it is still more profitable to purchase mainland sims and mainland parcels, in general..... Just my obeservations. Take care, Pink
