Cingular broadband card for laptop and playing SL on the road

I did a search and found some information back last October, but mainly addressed wi-fi.

I currently have Cingular cellular service and thinking about getting their wireless card for my laptop when I am on the road. A buddy of mine swears his Sprint card gets him 800-1.5, while his friend's Cingular gets over 500. This was download speeds and not SL.

Is anyone using a Cingular card in their laptop and able to play SL? I realize the speed is compromised and doubt you'd even get streaming video, but can you still play?

Thanks

I hope you get some sort of answer, I have Cingular for my phone too and like it but I am thinking of getting a Sprint broadband card for my lappie because I heard that they are the fastest... maybe some folks who use broadband cards in their laptops will let us know how fast they really are?

Problem for me, I am still in Cingular contract and I think if you don't have cell service (phone) with company, they charge alot more for the Broadband cards & plans.

Yes. I have a Cingular card for my laptop, and I have used it to play SL with no problem.

I've been using Sprint EVDO since day one, but am on a slower tower (500ish down, 100ish up) which works fine thankfully.

Sometimes my connection works better than a friend in CA on a cable modem surprisingly!

I regularly go to live music events and have also watched a movie and other streaming video in SL.

However if everyone knows the answer in a trivia game, those on cable win instead of those of us at DSL speeds.

(Oh, and I don't use a broadband card, I tether my cell phone...) ;)

According to LL they do not support any form of wireless connectivity

and if you do use wireless you are prone to inventory loss

the packet loss accounting is not programmed correctly for wired access, let alone wireless.

good luck tho :)

Read the Cingular TOS very closely. I am not familiar with Cingular but I have read Verizon and Sprint's TOS's for broadband and they specifically prohibit their use for gaming and music streaming (other than their own VCast service).

And yes, they would consider SL a game even though we consider it much more. So since SL would be both a game and a source of streaming music as far as they are concerned, its usage on their service would be a violation of the service agreements.

Was considering signing up until I saw these provisions.

I've used T-Mobile's aircard with good success. It's not cable-fast, but if the signal is good I can get into SL just fine.

I got started with T-Mobile because their aircard is a flat rate per month ($50) regardless of how much you use it, unless you're overseas (VERY EXPENSIVE). Not sure what state-to-state roaming charges might be like in the US as my traveling tends to go much farther afield.

I tried a friend of mine's Cingular "Sierra 595" card and got about 700 download speeds. When I fired up SL, I got message saying 768 required for streaming audio. Needless to say, I could not hear any music, but I was able to play fine with no noticable lag.

I did see there is some newer cards with upgraded networks on Sprint & Cingular that say average speeds of 600-1.4 is not uncommon for downloads.

That is odd about the TOS statements and streaming audio. Most of the ads contained "listen to streaming audio" on the websites for the service.

Yes it does seem odd. And it is possible I am misinterpreting the provision. But here is is, from the Verizon TOS:

From: someone

Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading, or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections.

@Starbuckk: It sounds like they are more concerned with uploading streams or running servers on the wireless network. And what is their definition of "continuous" in regards to games? I'm sure if you play SL or WoW for 24 hours straight or for several days straight, that could be considered "continuous". But what if you play for a couple hours a day, when traveling when not in meetings or sightseeing, etc.? How much would one have to do to set of the "continuous" alarm? That is the question!
