Could this mean trouble? Creator of Leading 3D Virtual World - Linden Lab Caught Off Guard? San Francisco, CA – April 1, 2007 – Linden Lab®, creator of 3D virtual world Second Life® ( www.secondlife.com), is now faced with the prospect of losing it's own virtual real estate. What appears to be a mishap by "Governor Linden" could turn into something with far reaching consequences. Apparently the Welcome Area land was being transferred during a planned maintenance operation, when it was accidentally set purchasable by anyone. Within 3 seconds the land was grabbed. The land ownership now appears owned by an automated computer program. Known to residents as the "Supreme Landbot Ninja", it has been causing havoc in this virtual world for the past several weeks. Rumors have spread that it was created by "Plastic Duck" in cohorts with another anonymous rogue scripter. As of today the land has been put back up into the market for sale, several land speculators have started creating 16 square meter plots known as "Sim Killers".... [snip]

Did this happen before or after SL was bought out by Blockbuster?

Yea i doubt that LL will just let something like this happen. If it does ever happen, they will definitely roll all 4 sims back to a older state before it happened.

Bots are illegal, so why are they still around?

Bots are illegal. It creates an unfair advantage for the other players.
LL can simply take the land back if they want to. Simple. They have every right to, while at the same time banning the bot account.

Yes, but imagine the fun that we would have in being able to point at laugh at LL for it happening. And the feeling of triumph those who had it happen to them would feel, for all the times LL had not helped them. Maybe it would wake the company up to the actual issue that the regular user faces.

Hence the Dozen or so recent landbots threads. IF landbots were illegal, then we could report them and get them removed. Unfortunately they are not, and thus we can not.

Hence the Dozen or so recent landbots threads. IF landbots were illegal, then we could report them and get them removed. Unfortunately they are not, and thus we can not. Regardless, it creates an unfair advantage for other players -- because it's a bot with automated tasks. This applies to any other game, which has rules on the very same subject. In addition, bots are using an unnecessary amount of LL's resources with the constant automatic queries it executes to LL's server every few seconds. Pretty clear that they are illegal, and should be illegal for Second Life as well. The reason it's not illegal yet, is because LL doesn't have the man power (programmers) to create statistic bots that analyze player behavior to detect bot actions. Why does it take dozens of landbots threads to get a point across to LL? Or maybe the point has been made, and I should be asking instead Why does it take dozens of landbots threads to get a response from LL? Wait, have we received a response from LL yet on this subject? I'm guessing not, since, hence the dozen of recent landbots threads. Right?

Gotta hope it's not somebody or somebodies with an LL connection...

And right now they know about the bots and are not removing them. Theres been a big push to GET linden labs to remove the bots. But until Linden Labs says they are illegal - they are not. They dont need statistics, they know who the major bot owners are. Besides as soon as they declared bots illegal would be plenty of people turning them in. Id be interested to know where you get your information. Since theres been literally hundreds of posts on this subject and no one has spoken with the certaintity you have on them being illegal in the TOS. A lot would like to get it to that point. Some people have been quite vocal championing that landbots use excessive resources, etc. But no one - Except you - has said that Linden Labs feels they are illegal but dont have enough programers to do anything about it yet.
