I intend to build a nice sand beach near my castle. Anyone ever built a beach? I am grateful for any recommendations (textures for sand, tools, etc.) Many thanks, Violet

Do you own the sim? Or just a parcel in the sim? If you own the sim, it can be done, to some extent, with sim-wide texture control and terraforming. But it isn't easy to do it in just one area.
If you own less than the whole sim, you'll have to make your beach from prims. You can use the terrain textures from the library. They work fine on prims.

Yes, I thought there is better texture around than the one in the library. Sand seems to be too dark for a beach. The beach then has to be totally flat (i.e. built from 10x10 boards) no hills possible, right?

From: Violet Stuer Yes, I thought there is better texture around than the one in the library. Sand seems to be too dark for a beach. The beach then has to be totally flat (i.e. built from 10x10 boards) no hills possible, right? I've built one prim beach in my Second Life, and it came out fairly well. I managed to slope the thing, but had do extend it out into the water itself and terraform the land up to meet it to prevent a rather nasty 40 meter drop off. Yes, it was flat, but I managed to sculpt some minor variations into that using 10m x 10m cylinders and spheres. Use your imagination--land sculpting can be fun when done with prims. As for textures, my advice is to use the ones in the library. There may be better ones available, but in my experience you'll get a better mesh with the existing land if you stick to the Linden provided texture set (they're the same textures used on the land itself and are designed to work together). It's been a while since I worked with that texture set (about 6 months), but hunt around in the texture folder of the Library... there are several beach type textures in there, some darker than others. You should be able to find something you can use. Kam

I saw a really cool beach the other day but it was very big. It mainly featured sand dunes made out of cut speres and cylinders all slopping down towards the water and was quite a complex build. I think i may have LM'ed a store in the same sim so I will have a look when i am inworld later and send the LM if I have it as you need to see it to appreciate how good it was. Alternatively search 'places' for beach and see what others have done
