My entire sim (Yabune) and three neighboring ones are now in the shadow of a 4 sq sim checkerboard hovering at about 40m. it's not a display bug - it highlights when selected, has a name (infinite checkerboard) & creator, and appears to be a single prim. This may be old news, but it's new to me.

Question:how?

It's a giant prim. As far as I know, people used to somehow create them and use them to save prims when building, but LL no longer allows their use because they can be easily abused in manners such as the one you witnessed.

I had a complaint about someone abusing a giant prim on a property near one I owned about a week ago. Not 4 sims in size but a good 100mx100m... Very annoying to say the least. I reported it, it's all you can do sadly.

Obviously the game technically supports them, or you wouldn't see such a thing. Not all of the big prims are bad. Just AR that one.

From my experience of reporting their use to LL, it is very much a potluck affair whether thy allow them or not.

Before anyone goes on about how 'evil' mega-prims are I'd like to point out that they do have valid uses when used responsibly. I use them in some of my builds and have seen some being used in large-scale builds. Octopia (RIP) comes to mind. It's not the prim that's the problem, it's the user that determines whether it's used constructively or destructively.

I rezzed a boat or a house or something out of a freebie box once to see what it was and it must have been one of these giant prims, because I immediately got dozens of messages about my object not being able to enter parcels that were as far as two sims away, and autoreturns on one-prim objects for days from far-flung parcels. I was so horrified at what I had done that I flew around and tried to delete as much as I could. There is a small chance it could be an accident - you might try to IM the owner and ask them to remove it before you AR them.

If I could remember who created the freebie box with this monster in it, I would have AR'd them.

Although you can't create huge prims, any huge prims created before the 10m limit can still be used (but not resized). It is possible to buy a box of them (but don't ask me where).

AFAIK use of them is not illegal and LL will not delete them in world.

Giant prims, just another fine griefer product from Libsl, the same folks that produced the God Mode hack, Copybot, Campbot and Landbot. Unbelievably Linden Labs even gives Libsl space in one of the Beta Testing sims to 'test' this crap before unleashing them on the main grid..

Giant prims are legal if used properly. As to your 4 sim prim, your only option is to either get the owner to delete it, find a Linden to delete it (good luck on that) and to AR it as it is not being used in a legal manner.

Did you see a giant prim? A megaprim is characterized by being big, not by reproducing and moving about.

There doesn't seem to be a megaprim in Yabune now.

What happened to it?

There was one big ol' honkin' thing blocking my vision that I managed to delete with a click - but then also an assortment of parts scattered around that I had to hunt down. Perhaps it was something much worse than a megaprim.

I used my mine to block other ugly rotating for sell signs, mcdonalds. flashing neon big prim that was protesting the fact my land is private access only because they bought a lot that they wanted to sell right next to me and was mad at me and I wouldn't buy their lot.
Now I turned mine into very tall see through forest and will move the trees together if the neighborhood gets uglier.
Didn't think these were abusive my neighbors neon big sign was abusive what I am doing is just survival and marking my access line.
