Hi, I'm wondering if other people have this problem and have found a solution. When I'm trying to change clothes on my AV, often when I've taken something off (and it no longer shows (worn), I still see it on my AV. I've found sometimes putting something else on the same position (e.g. pants) will remove the first thing, but sometimes I have to log out and log back in for it to fix. I don't know if this is a function of the sim I'm on -- I'm usually in the women's dressing room at NCI.
Suggestions?
And on a totally unrelated note, I can't find any explanation of the difference between "mainland" and "islands" -- is there one? Or is the mainland just a collection of islands that are adjacent? Does it matter?
Thanks!

Alvie, it is actually changing clothes but is just taking a long time to show up on your computer. It may be due to packet loss, or your computer could be slow (processor, video card, or both, or bandwidth problems). Or it could be both SL and your computer.
Things have been a little rough lately as SL has been experiencing massive growing pains. Give it some time.

And regard to Mainland and Islands - the Mainland is large chunks of space run and "managed" directly by Linden Labs - I think there are currently three large areas - 2 are joined by a navigable strip of sea but the third is not attached (so you can't fly or sail to it from the others for example). Islands are privately owned (in so far as anything at all is owned) managed and run by the person and or group who have purchased them - islands can be grouped, some perhaps rival "mainland" size. The important difference to you and I is that we can buy land on any of the mainland parts and own it without hinderance - we can only "rent" space on an island from its owner, we have to follow their rules "the covenant" or risk getting kicked off. If we own a chunk of land more than 512m (on the mainland) we will have to pay "tier" fees monthly and these get paid to Linden Labs. On an Island we will also pay fees these might be called rent or tier but either way we have to pay these to the owner or their representative (not Linden Labs). To own land on the Mainland you must have a premium account (pay the monthly fee) but any account can use "island" land as long as you can come to an agreement with the Islands owner.

Here's what happens: your SL client downloads all body textures, skin + clothes, and "bakes" them together into a new texture. This new texture is uploaded to the SL server and distributed to everyone around you. The baking process can take a while, depending on the speed of your PC, your connection speed and database delay.
Instead of relogging, you can open and close the appearance menu. Or select Client --> Character --> Rebake textures (press Ctrl+Alt+D if the Client menu is not shown).

I've had trouble with this from the start. Rebaking sometimes helps. Going in and out of appearance edit mode sometimes helps. Mostly, though, I just stick to a couple outfits I like. Experimenting with clothing is too tedious, which is a shame since customization is a big draw for a lot of people.

Strangely I've rarely found 'rebake' works very well. The Appearance toggle does most of the time. I do try and limit my changing to being indoors, at home, in my quiet area, so there's not a multitude of other things going on around me for the poor little hamster in his wheel to keep up with
