Do you think LL is going to expand with more mainland, or kill it off in favor of estate land?

16 mainland sims to auction every few days until they run out of server space (and unpronouncible sim names).

Until they run out of... server space?

Then what? People keep joining SL, land prices skyrocket, and the grid's growth stops?

only my opinion: they will stop for a month or two like it did in November. Then they will get more servers. or they will collapse under their own weight.

I do foresee a slowdown. We have not beaten our record of 40K concurrent users two weeks ago.

they will put more and more. There is no reason to stop the expansion. they can for sure deliver at least 500 sims of mainland every month. And also recently they were looking for the right IT person to take them from 4k sims to 10k sims. They have proved till now that they can put online around 1000+ sims per month (mainland + private islands). And the most easy thing is ofcourse to order a bulk of 150 servers and have them delivered every 2 weeks (that's 600 sims). I would expect either a whole new continent , either by expanding south of the latest one (like south america style) or an expansion to the far east part of the existing one. In 1 -2 weeks , or even earlier will find out.
With what they do now at least they stabilized a bit the market prices in mainland. I think they would wish to see lower prices.

I would imagine that SL will continue to expand while there is a demand for space by residents and while LL can afford the hardware.

But maybe there will be some more existing land coming on the market as casinos go down the pan!

Yes we need more land. There's not enough ban lines to run into. We also need a lot more empty clubs and such...

Then they buy more servers. LL are adding something like 200 new servers a month (I mean the actual physical hardware in their warehouse in San Francisco), and have well in excess of 30,000 already.

There is a bit of a problem here. The reason it took so long to start the new expansion of mainland, at least from Lindens I spoke with back in November and December, was due to the high demand for both islands AND mainland. In short, they were limited by servers AND physical space for their servers. LL has to have a RL presence, a place where the servers and Lindens that maintain them, are physically housed. Like people, servers require a certain environment to stay active long term. Creating these rooms costs serious money, and even with the RL real estate market readjustment, San Francisco, CA is still some of the most expensive land in the real world. Not to mention, constructing server rooms, getting the servers themselves, and hiring staff to keep the servers running and replace them when they fail, etc, all cost money. LL is a small to midsized company growing REALLY fast! Money and reorganization are constantly required, and that takes time to aquire and balance.

Servers are only the tip of the iceberg. LL has other problems that only time and learning will fix. It's like human developement. You can't force a company to grow and faster than it is able.

Joy got it right!

This may also be a reason for them starting up in Boston? 'Course WHY they seem to pick the most expensive damn places to put up shop, I just dont know. I'd pick a place with a lower cost of living.

Maybe eventually they'll branch out to having Server farms in Europe?

Funny thing- long ago when I mentioned about spreading out the servers, forum-ites said "But then the lag from TP'ing would take long!!!! It wont work!!!" Then I got to thinking = Alot of you arent from the USA, so how would spreading out servers be any different than connecting from another continent???

Tp'ing is a problem smaller than sim-crossing.

Wow. With the Anshe wannabes becoming more rare and the end user buyers as scarce as they are now, that kind of output should make for some interesting auctions. Can I get a closing bid of $1004.00?

I'll be happy enough just to leave the wannabes for later, now if we could only get rid of the original.
