Do a search on the first name "Mannequin" - notice the creation date on all of those avatars?
Check them letter by letter - Mannequin A Mannequin B - go through the alphabet. i did.
there are a total of 225 avatars that have the first name "Mannequin" in Second Life as of 11/14. Of those 225, only TWO were NOT created on 11/07. The other 223 "Mannequin" avatars are unverified accounts.
It's more than copying avatars, it's creating the accounts to be the avatar...
of course, if this helps pump up the resident numbers, LL is probably excited they're able to do this so efficiently. i just wish they wouldn't keep crashing my home sim in the process.

I'm not sure, but I think someone did that by simply registering a bunch of alts. I'm sure it's not too hard to do, with the right piece of JavaScript. CopyBot cannot register a new account. It's simply not possible.

Things that make you go hmmmm....

Are you saying that someone paid 9.95... 223 times to make these alt accounts or.... that someone made 223 diferent email addys to have them free?
Seems funny to me that anyone would go to that length in one day to make 223 email accounts so to have that many free alt accounts because now you are allowed only 1 free account per email addy and that would make them verified.

I'm saying that libSecondLife cannot create accounts. The only way to do that, that I know of, is through the web site interface. There ARE, however, ways to script your web browser to access any web site and punch data in. Couple that with a "catchall" address on a domain (forwards any e-mail to one inbox), and you've got a hell of a way to mass-create alts. See? that only took about 20 seconds to think up, and I'm not exactly the commited hackery type. Imagine what I could do with an hour to think about it.

223?
11-15-2006 00:05
someone registered 223 alts in one day?? It looks like they ran out of available last names and had to stop. Lucky for us, huh?
bypassing the onscreen security? yea, it's probably easy to do given the right script i can see using a fake email addy, randomly generated in the correct format... they aren't really verified anyway i can see getting a new ip addy each time also to bypass hashing... if all they're really registering is part of the ip address and not anything machine specific.
but bringing them inworld at the same location? perhaps they didn't start at that specific location, but enough of them landed there to cause me to crash from a neighboring sim at least three times that night, as well as eventually causing the sim they were coming into to be taken offline. Aside from making my home sim impossible to stay in, it affected at least one neighboring sim.
all i want to understand is WHY?
(did i mention that they were coming in world at the libsecondlife facility in Hooper?)

None of the information you input has to be true. It doesn't even ask you to click a link in an email to verify the account.

Beacause the individual that posted the picture with all of his mannequins in the same spot wanted to take a pretty picture. I don't know why. Go ask *****. Oh wait, that's naming names. There's a link in one of these threads to a picture of a ton of 'bots standing around, looking identical. The name on that picture is who you should go ask.

From: Cessee Hedges all i want to understand is WHY? Cos LL thinks they're adorable. (and hey, when your company has never been in the black, having a free debugging team of people who are prolly hoping to get jobs at LL someday is really quite advantageous I would think)

Nope. Enter garbage info on the form, and decline to give payment info, claim it's your first account, and the account is created for no charge. It's stealing $9.95 USD from Linden Labs every time they do this, but it's an all too common practice, facilitated by the LL registration process' complete lack of any attempt at authentication or verification of ID. They do not even try to make sure the e-mail address is valid.

I'm going to send this to Linden Review, it's in a gray area of the Forum Guidelines.

Peace I listed this in the LR submit. Torley Linden: Hi! You can broadly discuss topics like these in many Resident-run forums. However, Resident Answers is a place to earnestly ask for help -- which the original post really isn't.
Please read the Guidelines, and please don't misuse this forum.
