heyas;
i belong to a few groups. builders support, scripters support. i log in, im doing my own thing, minding my own business, busy building. suddenly i get an im alert. what is it? second life telling me that somebody left a group im session that was going on before i was even THERE! why do i need to know this? in fact, why do i need to know when anybody leaves a group im? or ANY im? i really don't. i get paranoid about closing those group im windows, too. because i know somewhere, somebody is getting messages about how i just up and left. and is probably annoyed by the distraction.
so...!
is there any way i can turn off im notifications? i can't find anything in the help or knowldge base. well, i can turn busy and turn them off altogether. but i dont mind seeing people talking/asking stuff. just this leaving bit. any tips? secret debug codes?
thanks!

if you go into the World menu at the top and Set Busy...you will not receive any IMs. they will be held for you.

I wish we could receive only notices from groups. I hate some of the spam that comes across IMs.

It would be nice to have the option of killing group IMs. The nonstop DJ spam gets annoying at best.

I agree utterly that these irrelevent messages are annoying. Last night I was turning IMs off every few seconds, including groups or subgroups I don't even belong to. I used to cull my groups for the amount of spam I got but that loses your tags. Do these 'DJ' IMs hit me just cos I'm within range?

Hmm, I wonder if "mute" would work in that case. I keep forgetting about it. Some times when I go into a store, their chat welcoming me covers up my whole screen. This really irritates me. If I can't see anything in their store, how do they expect me to buy anything. A word to the wise, a simple "welcome" would suffice, instead of burying me in chat. **wink**

This drives me nuts! I don't mind getting IMs from groups I belong to, but WHY do I get an IM stating that someone has "left this session" or whatever it says???? I don't care! This is *especially* annoying when I get am IM like this when I haven't even used that IM channel at all during the current session. I'd love to be able to mute just that little message. Gimme the worthwhile stuff, but don't bother me with this.

And the most annoying message of the year is..........."so and so has left this session"! *balloons falling* I asked for the ability to disable group IM's in feature suggestions but it never went anywhere. I would do the poll thing or the suggestion thing that gets votes and is tracked, but I haven't figured out how yet. We can disable group notices so far, but not the IM's which can get very spammerific.

A Sorta Workaround
03-21-2007 07:08
heyas; i have a sort-of work around for this. but it involves work :/ and it's not thoroughly tested. open your im window, and in the new im tab, click the group you want to 'turn off' for now. click start to open a new im to the group, then click close. (sorry, i dont know if this informs everyone that you've left the session or not. you weren't actually active in the session... but then again, sl probably does it just to be annoying.) this should make you inactive to the group, until someone starts a new 'session.' (when that is determined, i dunno. probably through some arcane socio-cultural algorithm.) note: if you close the session on a very active group (ie: lucky chair groups) that never have a session 'end,' but later want to return to receiving the messages, make a new im to that group, but dont click close. (you dont actually have to send text to re-activate your session. i bet all you non-newbies knew that! )
