Hello!

Just wanted to build offline. The viewer would not have to show much, maybe just a Sandbox Area. I would like to get more into building and scripting, but do not want to do it online.

Be able to build, store it in an Offline Inventory, then when I do log on, just transfer it from the Offline Inventory to the Online Inventory.

Is it possible to run SL Offline?

Thanks in advance!

You can check out opensim at http://openmetaverse.org/wiki/OpenSim

You won't be able to directly transfer you inventory from the opensim to SL though.

There are some clumsey backup and restore LSL scripts you can get that send all prim info about an object to an external server, then you can put that data in a note card in SL and run the script to regenerate the pbject. But... it wont do scripts and you have to hand upload all the texutures again etc :( not that great.

If you are just concerned with uploading textures or animations repeatedly and wasting money, try using the beta grid. Then when your textures/animations are "final" you can uplaod them once to the main grid.

True offline building is something a LOT of people want but just doesn't exist at the moment :(

Thanks for the replies.

Was hoping to hear something good, but guess it is not to be yet.

:(

Again, thanks for the replies.

OpenSIM is a very cool idea and I am watching it with tremendous interest, but it's barely even capable of anything at the moment.

[EDIT] Hmm... I just did an SVN update and I see a great many changes in svn... Maybe it can do more now? I'm checking it out again :)

[EDIT #2] Nope... Still barely able to do anything. Still, it's a fantastic idea, and I hope that it gains a lot of momentum.

I found the information on the site very confusing. I see mention of running it on Linux, and problems using it on various Windows, but no mention of Macs.

I'm assuming there is no Mac-compiled version, but is it something that can be run in the Unix layer of Macs (either from a Terminal window, or X11)?

Frankly I've always been a little surprised the SL client doesn't come with a personal mini-sim that you can run locally (but connected to the asset server). Not a place that others can get to... more like a place where you can experiment with building for learning purposes. And so everyone would have a private place to Edit Appearance!
