Last night I looked at the total residents on the main page and it was 6,009,000 something...today it is 6,044,000 something...Where are all these people coming from in less than 24 hours to sign up more than 30,000 accounts? I am just staggering from the growth of SL, it's unreal how quickly the numbers go up which really makes me wonder?
Correction, make that 6,047,000 or so....in the 5 minutes it took me to write this 3,000 people signed up for SL??

Agreed, a lot are alts, etc... But I bet that recent Businessweek feature piqued the business world's curiosity. ( http://www.businessweek.com/technology/special_reports/20070416virtuallife.htm?campaign_id=rss_daily) I was drawn in by an Economist article last September.

I'm also suspecting that media and certain groups in Europe are also the cause of the influx. Non USA based residents are climbing quite rapidly. And... word of mouth is a fabulous thing.
Personally, I am completely in love with how international SL is and where it is certain to go. SL will benefit greatly from RL diversity.

The word got out that the Lindens responded to Project Open Letter and are close to fixing all issues on the Grid.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau World Population Clock there are only 6,592,845,095 people in the entire world. Could 6,000,000+ of them actually have SL accounts?? Is it reasonable to think that 1 out of every 1,000+ people in the world has an account in SL? I don't think so.... Obviously many of the 6,000,000 accounts must be alts. How many? If 80% of them are alts. That leaves what ... 1,200,000 actual individuals who have accounts in SL. That would be what? 1 out of every 5,416 people in the world???? Still an impressive number... But is it real?

Wonder how many Five Minute AVs are contributing to the 6 mil total...

I was on the Original Help islands this morning ( the one's you can't go back to ) and it was pretty busy , Most if not all the AV's seemed to be French , Maybe LL have had a bit of a publicity drive in france ? The 6 Million number is padded, Most are alt's, The rest are made up of 5min lookers who dont get it & old account's that have been abandoned. My guess is SL has a real number of about 50k to 70k members that log in durin the week and weekend's and bout 25 k that are regular loggin's who use SL every day .

Yup, almost everyone I know has 1 or more alts. (I don't btw) I think the numbers you mentioned are pretty close, Lostmedia. Also SL has been in various media throughout Europe, so that explains the rapid growth of Euro residents. Mandy C

It maybe that the French watch their own TV? L'Oreal recently showed its SL movie on French TV and have the movie on their website... Perhaps its an influx of wannabe models?

Mainly Alts and abandoned accounts. My French is improving: "Voulez vous couche avec moi ce soir" "Je suis une Neko - demi chat- demi femme" "Ou est le garlic?"

They are all welcome as long as they pay their way and dont grief. It is great to have an international community. Cosmopolitan and witty. Sexy and bringing new ideas. We are like a real country - coming to grips with new immigrants and new cultures. Good. I welcome it.
