I was concerned about installing a .exe file but I'm reassured by Nicholaz's reputation and I'm really like 17e.
Can we contribute in some way?

17e runs cleaner; its doesn't get soggy after awhile but it is for the main viewer not for First Look as far as I know.
My Dragon Avatar flew across sim boundaries like they weren't even there!

Yep. And it rocks. I had 4 concurrent clients running on a duel core with the affinity set to both processors. Yeah I was at 97% cpu but still was able to take a snapshot of me and some alts. And if you’ve ever tried to do that you know it’s no small task…pesky critters always looking around. Anyway back to Nicholaz’s viewer 17e. I’ve been running it for about 3 hrs now and holding at around 18 to 23% (single client). Let’s hope LL hurries and gets Nicholaz’s memory leak fixes out to the regular viewer and First Look.

I'm actually going back to 17d. 17e seems a little choppier on my machine for some reason, and I'm crosseyed again.

17e!?! 17b only came out the other day!! What happened to C and D!? This kind of break with ettiquette seems to me to display a contempt for the ordinary decencies of family life that reminds one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution!! 100 points if you can name the play and author from which my para-phrase comes.

DK Only on single core here, but can't run multiple clients on my laptop for some reason (and yes, I have put -multiple in the target pathway) despite being able to on my desktop with simillar processor arrangement. I get an error message saying "network error". The same happens with the official client too though. It must be a vista thing, as I'm still on XP on the desktop.

Info Please
06-20-2007 13:49
I am lost:/ of course not being computer savy is one big factor. I dont understand what the difference is between the application I am running LL's latest vs. this one. A bell in my brain is saying "Open Source" but that is as far as it goes. Does this run with LL's version? Replace it? I read First look... what is it? I know I will get some replys to search and read. I do read alot of the threads and I have read about Open Source but I am still not sure how this works with what I use to go into SL. Could someone please explain it to me? I would be grateful for the information. Thanks

It will open the same viewer, but however it's done , it makes the improvements. That's all Greek to me.

Thanks It's very easy..... you put the nicholaz.exe in your folder with the normal SL exe and run the nicholax instead. It doesnt effect anything other thaqn your connection to SL... Ive been running it nearly a week now and have had zero problems. If you dont care for it just use the old SL client.

It appears to be a Windows-only application that, when run, applies a patch to your copy of the official windows-version LL client app. You are then running a 'hacked' version of the LL client. When LL issues a new client, you'll need to locate the newest version of this patch and run it against that new client to retain the benefits that the patch gives you. If you believe, as many in this thread appear to, that the source of the patch is safe, then you're probably fine. If you are not familiar with the person who is the source of the patch, you could be opening a back door in your client for absolutely anything that programmer wants to add - inclusing a password stealer. Nicholaz is, according to the many posts here, an OK person, and unlikely to rip people off by issuing an intentionally nasty patch. But personally, I prefer to wait for LL to add it to the official cleint, *after* they have reviewed the code and deemed it safe, rather than download and install any old patch from any source. I have no way to read the code of this or any other open-source patch to verify that it isn't malicious.

The only way to be absolutely sure you will never get something harmfull on your system is to never log onto the internet. In the meantime I tend to trust people that are recomended to me by friends and the persons background. I have run the nicholaz client almost a week now and find it extremely smooth. No, I dont see every thing completely wonderful but it has neither harmed my enjoyment of SL or harmed my system in anyway. What it has done is made my SL experience better than it was.
