You can't really miss the Mainland.. given, to paraphrase a well known (in the UK at least) advert, it does exactly what it says in the name.. it's the Main large continents of which there are 2 ( or is it now 3? ).

Most of SL is the Mainland. If you are not sure where you are, click on about land and then go to the covenant tab. If there is no covenant, you are on the Mainland.
Another way to go to a Mainland sim is by sorting the land seach with the Mainland filter on. Then simply tp to any plot and you're on the Mainland.
If it's a specific sim you are looking for, enter its name in your Map.

There's no covenant on both of the private sims I rent on. In the covenant tab on the mainland the owner will say (none). Or just look around for large spinning "for sale" and ugly ad spots unfortunately.

Click on your map button, then zoom way out. You'll see three large masses of land--those are the mainland. Most privately-owned islands are not visible, though much of the "blank" blue space between continents is privately-owned land.
If you zoom back in a little, you'll see a bunch of little $ price tags showing; you won't see that on privately-owned land.

From: Raymond Figtree No covenant? Does that mean I can put up ugly ads on your private sims? It's one of those "use your common sense, we don't really have to spell it out, do we?" deals . The one plot is a zoned residential sim and she only accepts (accepted since we've all been there for 8-9 months) renters she likes so that's a pre-screening already. The other sim would make a good example of how the mainland could turn out with a little bit of supervision. Despite the lack of a covenant or any other building restrictions, the look of the sim has only steadily improved after they dropped the prefab rental houses and let everyone put one up of their own choice.

What is this blue space? is it undelivered private islands? or is it the ocean? If it is the ocean will it reamain that way forever?

If it is the ocean will it reamain that way forever? The blue, unnavigable, space is areas free for new sims to populate. Either with private islands or extensions to the mainland. I'd like to see more of it navigable though like the strip of water between the two halves of the origonal mainland continent.
