Hello, fellow Residents!

I posted the following comment to the Official Linden Blog with regard to this forum:

From: someone
The difference is... it's a zero tolerance forum! The sticky says that you'll be permanently banninated from the forums for merely being offtopic. Which means all but one of the people that have posted there so far are gonna get banned! I certainly wont be helping any residents there... I might ramble a bit as I do and get deemed to be offtopic!

Why do you suppose it was deleted? I would obviously like to avoid committing a similar offence!

Thanks in advance for your kind responses!

I think WAFFLES is the most useful answer anyone is ever going to find here. Ever.

So my answer is: WAFFLES.

Thank you for your question and please, do come again.

(I think it's because LL want us to be able to talk and help each other (laughable notion really), but not about anything interesting or fun, that wouldn't do at all!)

Thank you Willow, that was very helpful.

Where can I find some waffles?

There are some in my kitchen, I can't help you find your way there tho, it might be deemed as revealing RL information of my alt, and I might get banned :(

It's ok hun, I understand. I will travel the grid then, searching for some waffles. I wonder if a Linden knows?

Actually, the sticky says this:

From: someone
* In addition to the forum Guidelines, abusive behavior here will result in permanent removal of forum access. Making posts which are deliberately unhelpful or disruptively off-topic will lead to being banned. This is not a place for rants and disputes. It's easy to be nice.

I personally find it amusing that the forum has already acted like a magnet to attract childish behavior. This forum isn't meant to replace General Information or the Sand/litter box... The point of this thread is to help one another with actual issues that may have in the past been posted in what is now called "Linden Answers". Folks asked that they have the opportunity to jump in and share information and, hey, Linden Labs listened!

Getting back to your question, I'm afraid I don't know why your comment was removed from the blog. However, if you're unsure of the guidelines for this new forum, check out Torley's sticky. /327/8d/138314/1.html

So Siggy will be banned from forum posting.

Or we'll all know that the sticky only applies to some people.

That's quite a corner for LL to backed themselves into don't you think.

I can't tell what's on or off topic any more... and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

If you're looking for answers about Second Life - and let's face it, after the popularity of the sex in Second Life panel at SLCC, "Making Out" is a pretty big part of it - then any question can be legitimate, as it relates to Second Life. It's clear what LL is trying to do here: they're not answer Second Life Answers quickly enough, and want helpful residents to answer here, which I have no problem with. However, if you're going to put that responsibility on the residents, you also have to allow a bit of flexibility with the interpretation about "what is a legitimate question."

Some of my favorite moments in SL have been spent goofing off with Siggy; it's an integral part of my Second Life. The thread wasn't done in bad spirit, it wasn't mean, and there wasn't flaming; it was fun, and yes, a bit of goofing off ensued. Humor and having a laugh is typically regarding as welcoming, and this forum should seem welcoming.

Okay, I was all over the map there with my thoughts, but... heh. Bottom line: I don't mind helping LL out by being helpful to other residents with questions, but let's not be kill-joys. Draw the line at mean spirited comments and personal attacks. Leave the fun.

Regards,

-Flip

Yeah Flipper that's as good an excuse as any. I'm still waiting for Torley's official response before commiting to something that's properly managed rather than just sloshed around as another colossal waste of time.

Pretend this is real life for a moment.

(At least humor me, please).

Say you walk into a real life discussion group; the topic could be a variety of things, from AIDS, to Photoshop to War and Peace, but it's a specific topic. Say someones goes in there and stand in the middle of the group and start talking loudly about your romantic life or breakfast food or something that has nothing to do with the discussion group topic. And they don't stop when asked to stop.

They'd get thrown out, right? You might even go so far as to call them rude, right?

Anyone has the right to say and think what they want, but no one is obligated to give you a soapbox to say it from.

"LOL the internets is serious business!" At risk of bringing them down on my head, that's the mantra of a infamous group with a repuatiion for mocking people who take the Internet seriously while they themselves hide behind anonymity and somtimes cause a lot of grief for other people.

Contrary to popular belief, I do have a sense of humor. But on the internet, as in RL, there is a time for play and a time to be serious. This forum is meant to be analagous to Live Help in-world, not the playground that was General and the Litterbox. People are going to come here expecting serious answers. Please, lets keep it that way.

(Sorry for ranting here, Torley, but IMO if this forum is even going to get off the ground, these things have to be made clear.)

Elle, I hear what you're saying on one level, but if you analogy to Live Help is to be taken...

Without humor, I would have left Live Help long ago. Most people appreciate a bit a humor with their help. I know it keeps the Live Helpers themselves sane during stressful times. It humanizes the experience and often makes a connection felt with a resident in need.

Let's stop comparing forums discussing SL to real life tragedies, please; if there's a problem with the grid, there's no real harm done, and minimal financial implications in the grand scheme of things. The same can not be said for the Web (which might be true of SL some day), and I find comparing a help forum to real-life tragedy to be somewhat distasteful. The metaphor just doesn't work on any level.

Regards,

-Flip

Has it occured to you that many people would not be here but for the humor?

Thought not.

That's a GREAT question, Taco!

On the internet, even in as immersive an environment as Second Life, it can be difficult to infer what people have or have not considered, since body language is so misleading!

Hopefully, in the future, a formal list of proscribed expressive animations will be instituted as policy!

Flip, I ddin't read your first post before writing mine, that disclaimer inserted...

I'm not saying you can't be funny while helping people, and slipping the occasional off-topic comment into an otherwise helpfull post isn't going to bring down the "OMG wrath of the ResMods" or as Torley said somewhere on the blog, Rabid Watermellon Dogs (I definately think he's getting frustrated too). But deliberately spamming a thread with snarky and/or off topic and/or deliberately unhelpfull replies will.

I'm not sure which "comparings forums to real life tragedies" thing you're talking about, except my including "AIDS discussion group" in my example list, but if you take that one out there are two other non-tragic examples and the point is unchanged.

How about if I said this instead: Give people here the same respect (or if you don't respect them, at least not-being-rudeness) that you would give them if you were talking to them in RL.

I disagree with your assesment of the spirit Siggy's thread was posted in, but I would rather discuss that off the forums.

Some blog comments were lost earlier because we quickly upgraded WordPress at the same time Kris commented--Jeff had a message up while it was happening. Sorry. :(

Humor's funny. Lots of places on the Internets for lulz.

But... a Resident who enters here looking for help and ends up being confused by many joke threads, isn't going to have a humorous time at all. I know because of all the emails I get, including some from Resis who don't speak English well or who struggle to interpret posts, saying "I asked a question and they all laughed at me". It's pretty hard on one's heart when you've heard it hundreds of times as I have. And touching on what Elle said, that does frustrate me. :\

And then I think of how we can help make the Second Life experience better--which leads to a forum like this.
