Faster computer and better graphics card. Reduce detail and draw distance will also help.

There's really no one way. Its all a matter of having a machine that meets or exceeds maximum specs and playing around with settings in Preferences. Just need to find that "sweet spot" where you can see the details in world AND get a decent frame rate.

i know this. yx but anything else? Always an open question.... perhaps you can supply your system specs? Turn off avatar vertex, turn down flexi mesh sliders fully left, turn down particles to 0, turn down composite layers to 2, turn fog to 2.0 or less, turn up your bandwidth to match your own bandwidth (real speed, not ISP quoted), turn off bump and shiny, turn off VBO, turn local lights off (sun and moon only), turn terrain to low, defrag your hard dsic, run a registry cleaner, give yourself the biggest SL cache you can afford on your HD, turn off any media streams.... and that's a start. _____________________

![]() this is not ment to be a high FPS game be happy if you get 15 i turned my draw distance up to 256 a few days ago, wow what a HUGE diffrence it makes Sure it runs a tad slower, and it takes a bit to load but onces you got it loaded its a whole new world to be able to see everything in the sim your in plus the sims around you... _____________________

If you press ALT+ENTER you can force SL to run in full-screen mode which can give you a significant improvement in FPS. Most people tend to run in the default windowed mode because it's a hassle to tab out of full-screen SL when you're simultaneously working in Excel or Photoshop or Notepad, but full-screen has always given better performance.
EDIT: I should note that this also depends on your current screen resolution. If you're on a notebook with a default screen resolution of 1600x1200 you may actually get worse performance in full-screen than in windowed mode if you normally have a smallish (~800x600) SL window open, because 1600x1200 is literally 4 times the pixels. _____________________

Sure it runs a tad slower, and it takes a bit to load but onces you got it loaded its a whole new world to be able to see everything in the sim your in plus the sims around you... Not recommended for those without a gigabyte upon gigabyte of ram and a huge SL cache... I have my draw distance way the heck down because otherwise I get too many textures and all that disk access grinds everything to halt, and when it's a -really- intensive area, half the things around are always gray because every time I twitch one texture displaces another. And then the client crashes. Well, not so much crashing with the more recent updates. Still, I don't like the memory issues that a big draw distance causes. I'll live with being nearsighted for now. |

This is very helpful. What is avatar vertex and how do I turn it off? You will find all these in the Preferences, in various Tabs. I'm not ingame atm and wont be for a few more hours, have a poke about yourself, if you get stuck, IM me ingame at around 5:30-6pm GMT tonight and I'll run through it with you. _____________________

A draw distance of 256 is a huge strain on any system, I would suggest you use 128 as a maximum unless you are looking to buy a sim and want to see it all lol... Lowering fog distance to say 2.0 will also help stop your HD from thrashing too much. When I tp in laggy situations, dropping draw distance to 64 and fog to 0.5 or 1.0 helps the transition. Once everything has rezzed, I up those values.

Also shut down all the junk running in the background. I usually keep my draw distance at 96-128, but last night I went to an empty sim and maxxed it out to 512. It took forever to rezz but it was pretty awesome. Maybe someday.......

256 would be unnecessarily taxing on all the surrounding sims. Draw distance isn't just client-side, it has an effect on the sims as well. Ooo hadn't realised that. And now that I have realised it I don't like it. Like several other posters I tend to start off small & then turn it up & accept the lag if I want better views for any reason but this makes reponsible / practical usage more of an issue. More importantly, if someone has a party on my home sim & they all turn up wearing loads of bling and running scripts I know and they know it's going to affect performance. But if they all have nice big PCs and their draw distance at max they're probably not going to realise that it's affecting other users. |

I figure for my 10 bucks a month I can crank it up and indulge myself once in a while. _____________________
