Thanks to everyone who has been answering my questions..:). When I look at a profile in the game, I see some who have been given ratings. What does the rating do for you? And can players who are not verified rate you?

Rating used to affect stipends - now they do nothing pratical, I suppose.

Rating costs $L25, anyone with that sum can rate. You can't rate someone unless they or something they own or built is within range of clicking, though.

Ratings used to give you a bonus to your weekly stipend.
They're just for show now really.
I'd *guess* that unverified residents can rate too, but I'm not sure about that.

Rates use to be the in thing. and many did it when people had repect for others. Now well oldies still rate but the newbies well they do if they had the money.

I have no paticular ambition to rate anything...I have a few times, cause it deserved it...but otherwise...it starts to cost too much if you go around and rate alot.

Me and my friends rated each other, just so we wern't "0" anymore....Ever since no one has felt the intiative to rate me anymore...or me anyone else.

The rates are a bit like an appendix - leftover from long ago. But hey - I want to keep my appendix :-D

I do rate, when someone is worth it... And I also do like being rated too. It's a nice, albeit unofficial way for members to identify helpful or skilled people on SL before they interact with them.

It is my understanding from old timers that the main reason avatars rated each other was that avatars with high ratings received stipends. that is why you see avatars who have been around for awhile with really high ratings. Also, nonverified members cannot rate, or that is my experience. I didn't know about the stipend thing for a few months and I kept wondering when I ran across someone's name-wow I wonder what they did to get so popular-lol.

I use rating to express my appreciation... It is my way to say, I like what I see... a beautiful house, a good looking avatar, someone helping new people in a very good way.

My way to say: "Thumbs up!!!"

Before somethime in '05, it only cost $1L to rate someone. As you might imagine everyone was rating everyone to the point it was almost considered rude not to rate someone in all 3 catagories. I've had people ask me, "What's the matter, I'm not worth $3L?" when I only rated them for behavior and not appearence or building skills. The bonus on the stipend also made it very nice. (There are some with more than 2500 total ratings)

Alas, all good things.... :)
