I don't blame LL. I don't blame people who are not instantly suspicious of everyone.
I blame idiots with nothing better to do than be a waste of air usage and create things liek this. ~Jessy _____________________

To make this thread a bit more worthwhile...dont you have to set one of these things OUT in order to start off this bull? I was getting a buncha free stuff from a new friend and they were sending me things like crazy, I stopped looking just kept hitting ok. I then logged out because nothing was showing in my inventory...and when I relogged I got a sleeew of messages from this object from unknown blah blah. Those I did nothing with, but if I had accidently hit ok on one in the middle of my freebie rush (yay for people that help others tyvm) wouldnt it just be sitting in my inventory harmless until rezed?
Just want to have some clarification on this...so people know not to rez something you may just find in your inventory. |

Absolutely ... scripts should be blocked
10-08-2006 15:10
Scripts should be blocked from compiling and resetting for all those who did not sign up using a credit card or similar that used address verification in the sign up process. And force ID of creator of any object.
END OF PROBLEM. Lindens please WAKE UP. This is not helping your subscription base. For every griefer you let sign up and leave nasty objects around, you are probably losing at least one "good" customer. |

I assume you mean "Accepting".
Yes, just like e-mail attachments, you should not accept (or rez) an object from someone you don't know. Having said that... it would be nice to set a script flag, so that you could rez objects without running scripts in that object. It would be nice for editing scripts in objects that automatically do things when they rez (I have an obect that flies as soon as it's rezzed, but I have to modify it based on the area I'm in, so that it doesn't fly too far away). |

I was wondering about that myself...cause I want to change a sript on something I made before its rezzed so it doesnt run away from me before I can click it again.( it's a 3 part thing that is hard to click and set up to look right after its rezzed) I'll have to look in game and see again...why I couldn't. Shouldn't the script not run untill U SAY SO? _____________________

Tip: If you open your edit window first (usually by clicking BULD then just clicking the button for Edit in the window without Creating anything) then anything you Rez is automatically placed in Edit mode.
Scripts will still "fire" but the object is "locked" in place and you will have the edit window already open to do whatever needs to be done. ~Jessy _____________________

Well not many people know not to reject inventory offers from people they dont know. People need to be educated on the matter. I received an item and rejected it, partner was not smart enough (Wow that sounds bad) and accepted and rezzed the object on our sim. Few days later (today) we had a self replicating object in the corner of our sim sending her messages. Im not sure if this had anything to do with the object she accepted, but non the less, I think people need to be a bit concerned if they receive objects from an avatar unknown to them. |

Sad to say but I don't think these ideas will work - too many new people signing up who will not know any better or, like Scarlet said it'll happen by mistake with somebody who is expecting to receive something.
It's probably expensive to do but I think LL needs to add a way to track how objects replicate. Something that will let them say something like "if an object has copied itself so many times and move so far from it's origin, disable it and alert LL." Maybe not a final solution but it would certainly do a long way to slow the spread of these things without requiring residents to think. |

For all you knuckle heads out there..................Will you please stop excepting objects from people that you DO NOT KNOW>..... So when I offer an item for free and you don't know me, as you have been in grid for 20 minutes, you wont accept it. When you go to Yadnis and see lots of free things after someone gave you a landmark (but of course you didn't accept that either) you wont take any. When you see a classified listing for a tv, but you don't know the creator you don't buy it. Good idea, but impractible. LL need to create a security system that doesn't permit these easy types of griefing attacks to occur. Re: edit the item before accepting. Well it's called a Linden House, its got a script that I can't see in it as I don't have permissions. Again a good idea, but if you can't see the script, or even if you can and don't know LSL what good does that do? |

Well, the Tip was meant for experianced users on editing thier own works, not so much for preventing grey goo. The problem with your solution is it's the one currently in place. The "grey goo fence". It does look for parameters as you state, but then the attackers work around it and the only ones truely hurt are those with legitimate uage of that portion of the LSL scripting language. There are two adages that I think about in times like this "A lock only keeps an honest person out." and "What can be locked and encoded, can be unlocked and decoded." The only way to help new Residents is information. Something I personally think the Welcome Island and Help Island is seriously lacking. Two months into SL, and most persons know how to deal with the majority of "hiccups" in SL. Two months is a long time to stumble in the dark. However, saying LL should make it so a Resident doesn't need to think to prevent such things brings up a third adage; "Nothing is ever foolproof. Try and the world just makes a better fool." ~Jessy _____________________

Yes, just like e-mail attachments, you should not accept (or rez) an object from someone you don't know. that is exactly what i thought wheni first read about how the problem was spreading! it would be great if the Lindens could put that in the login window FIRST, more valuable than a system update ... "Don't accept items and open them if you don't know what they are or who they're from" sort of thing. because you see the login message beneath the bar even if the login fails, and LL could educate a TON of users before the next uptime. |

Beer
10-10-2006 09:14
As a noob I never thought of mallicious gifts. A club owner I had never met gave me a beer my AV was thirsty so I took it. A shop owner had a raffle script running and I won some eye ware I took them cause they were cool. OK now I am more educated on the wicked ways of greifers (thank you to this thread) most the stuff you get in SL doesn't allow modification so how can you look at the script to see if an object is infected? Do I just delete everything that has been given to me? What about the things I have bought? just cause I spend$L on something doesn't mean it can't be infected. Hell I can walk into a store and put up a display and sell stuff and I have been inworld just a couple weeks. Where can you draw the line? oh and BTW I dont "KNOW" anybody in SL If i were to limit my SL usage to people I "know" SL would be a very boring place indeed.
