Meaning to create a PayPal account solely for my Second Life dealings, I came across (it was hard to miss, in fact) this site: http://www.paypalsucks.com/
What is written there is quite alarming. Hence my question - how do you guys like PayPal? Have you ever had problems with them, are you contented with their service?

Been using it for years, for buying and selling. Never a problem. I tend to be sceptical of sites like this. The internet is full of crazy individuals with a personal grudge and total lack of anger management. Oh, but you'll have noticed that from the SL forums!

They have always resolved my problems quickly and to the fullest.

I think some of their CSRS *may* be foreign and in one instance I had difficulty getting them to understand my question, but that was nothing.

I definitely recommend paypal. If you can come on SL and play with LL`s lack of customer care, then certaintly give paypal a go.

That domain was registered in 2000. Seven years later a lot has happened. In 2007 PayPal received a banking licence in Luxembourg, promoting it to the status of a bank. As a consequence PayPal moved their headquarters to Luxembourg. Since 2004 PayPal had the status of an Electronic Money Issuer supervised by the U.K. Financial Services Authority. This means Paypal has to adhere to a lot of rules. Because I live in Europe. my relation with Paypal is through Paypal Luxembourg, and I feel safe to use their service. However US Paypal accounts maybe different, I'm not sure about the status in the US.

I've had some hassles with PayPal, where my account was frozen. I'm an American, using American banks and maintaining an American address, but I live and work (and use an IP address) overseas. Somehow this raised red flags at PayPal. The first time I tried to straighten things out, I gave up. I sent in faxes that never reached their intended party, one Customer Service rep would have no clue as to everything I'd just gone through with another, etc. I didn't really need PayPal for anything at the time, so I let things slide. Later, I wanted to accept money via PayPal, so during one of my times in the States I called Customer Service and did everything they wanted, painstakingly and tediously. It involved scanning and e-mailing or faxing such things as utility bills, bank account statements, credit card statements, passports and drivers licenses, etc. Eventually everything did get straightened out, and I've been using PayPal just fine now, even with all the weird IP addresses I use.

I also carefully perused the paypalsucks page when I was getting ready to start accepting money via PayPal for virtual goods. Basically, PayPal has no way of knowing if virtual goods (e.g. L$) are delivered or not, and if a buyer says they never got delivery PayPal will reverse the charges. Most sellers of virtual goods get around this by only dealing with buyers with a certain number of positive feedback points, with verified addresses, etc.

My take: PayPal wants to facilitate legitimate payments, but they don't want to facilitate fraud. They're perfectly willing to freeze an account until they're satisfied everything is on the up-and-up. If one is legit, PayPal does know what they want and things can get worked out. Dealing in virtual goods is done at the seller's risk--not the buyer's, and not PayPal's.

paypal are crap since they are now owned by ebay..

I remember buying something faulty online ..... I made a complaint ..paypal asked me to return the item which cost me 100 for the item and 10 for postage.

I returned the item and i got £15 back saying that all the seller had in thier account

Since then I dont trust Paypal .... they are theives and can not be trusted

Yes that's the way they work and people take advantage. On the paypal sucks website many people are out of pocket because of people taking advantage of paypal's procedures. If you send something to an unverified address you can't get proof of delivery, all the other person has to do is say they didn't get it and you're losing the money they paid you.

In a virtual environment, you can't prove that an item has been delivered.

To be fair to paypal it's people being gits that are the big problem. The main complaint from users is that paypal don't acknowledge how devious people can be or try and address how they take advantage.

Paypal had a rough start but has improved immensely since then.

The gripe site is good, though, keeps PayPal on its toes!

I have used PayPal for years, buying and selling, without a problem, touch wood.

Opening an account for buying/selling L$ wouldn't cause you any problems, they usually occur when you are selling on ebay etc and don't follow the guidlines like only sending to verified addresses and via trackable means.

I have been very satisfied with services provided by PAYPAL. Their security is so tight that I created flags altering some settings on my account. I didn't mind having to take an extra step to prevent others from taking money out of my account.

The gripe on the site is typical of larger corporations unfortunately. Its the growing pains of a successful enterprise.

I have dealt with PayPal for years, both as a customer and as a Verified merchant, and have never had the slightest problem with them.

Ok, thanks so much, all of you - that was very informative. Especially hearing that the sucks.com site is an old domain, and that things are different now, though, judging from these reactions, not yet perfect.
