This is funny, gleaned from my post box this morning, just think about the real life equals...... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/305127_secondlife26.htmlIF YOU VISIT First time? Here are some tips to keep your Second Life experience smooth and to allow you to hit the ground running: Beware of gifts from strangers. Somebody offered me a pair of shoes that made my avatar pregnant. To take your avatar to the next level, buy hair and skin. Misbehavior might get you suspended by the Second Life Abuse Team. Second Life has a thriving arts culture and night life. Ask more experienced avatars to recommend favorite spots. You will have to buy the appropriate body parts for mature activities. Until then, your avatar will have the anatomy of a Ken doll. Don't modify your avatar's appearance while standing in the middle of a public place. Nothing says "newbie" like a naked avatar in the mall. You can buy Linden dollars using a credit card or a PayPal account, but you don't need money to experience the world.

To which I would add: -Don't proposition every attractive avatar you come across. -Don't litter. Anything that comes out of your inventory either needs to go back into it or be deleted by you. -Don't ask for money and/or goods. Some kind soul might choose to take you under his or her wing, but don't expect it. @FD The list is from the article, the author of which is female.

Ok, perhaps I shouldn't ask... should we add that to the newbie list of don'ts - don't inquire about RL without being properly introduced?? Hey, I'm still trying to figure this whole thing out.... but nice to know there is a Seattle group out there... will they take someone from the islands?? - Meggy

To which i'll add: If you chose to ignore the above sage advice..... when you go up to some and ask them for 50L so you can buy [insert outfit/item here], Don't argue with them when they ask you not to beg for money, Especially when there is a sign posted in front of the store that says no begging. (happened to me yesterday so i invoked the awesome power of the MUTE button and left the store. The noob claimed it wasn't begging because she would model the outfit for me after she bought it. She couldn't grasp that it was still begging and that other people might not care what she looked like in or out of any outfit) To FD: That is something i'ld pay to see, BUT only if the male carries it to term AND gives birth, complete with contractions

I like the comment on that article that says "If I wanted to be broke and looking for things to do, I can do that in the real world and meet real people while getting off my butt." While I agree with the 'getting off (ones) butt' portion the rest of it is one of those comments I see often that I simply don't understand.
Firstly, just as in the real world if you want money in SL you have to do something to acquire it. Is this such a difficult concept? Honestly, this is like someone starting WoW and complaining that they actually have to play the game.
Secondly, I'm pretty sure I'm a real person. I'm also pretty sure everyone I've met in SL so far are also real people. Either that or Linden Labs is cranking out some fantastic AI. The idea that people on the Internet are somehow less real than people you meet face to face seems to be the seed to a lot of griefing behavior (both in SL and the Internet as a whole).
There also seems to be the idea that conversation via text chat is somehow less stimulating (intellectually but you may define this other ways ^o^ ) than a conversation that takes place in first life. Perhaps these people have never made it beyond "omg lol kthxbai" but I have to question the company they've kept rather than any actual lack of interesting conversation. Certainly I've been involved in some very thoughtful text chat over the years via email, old school MU* (where I met my husband, in fact), IMs, forums, and Second Life. Predating the Internet I even had some fascinating discussions in letter exchanges with penpals. Imagine that!
Anyway... /1 soapbox off - Some things just press my buttons wrongly. ^o^
