I've got a finance question today. If somebody wants to pay me say US$10 from his/her SL US$ account to my SL US$ account, is this possible or does he/she have to buy L$ first and then I have to sell them again? Many thanks for your inputs, Violet

You can add to your US$ balance. Go to your account page, on the right there, under the Linden Dollar heading, there's an option to increase your credit. Minimum transaction is US$25.

More specific

Sorry, maybe I have to be more specific. I own a medium size piece of land and my friends who live with me want to pay me a fair share of the land fee. Ideally they would directly credit my Linden US$ account from their Linden US$ account. How they credit their US$ account (CC, Paypal) is up to them. I would not like to use any paypal, etc myself for the transaction. Of course they could pay the "rent" in L$, but that would mean double exchange transactions. Any more hints? Violet

As far as I know there is no method within SL for them to transfer US$ from their account to yours. Within SL, it has to be L$. So they convert to L$, pay you, you convert back to US$.
If you don't want to do that, i.e. don't want LL to collect the exchange fees on both sides of the transaction, have your friends pay you directly via Paypal or whatever.

Violet Couldn't you create a group and deed the land to it, then all contribute a share of the tier to the group to cover it? That way each person would be billed directly, either from their US$ balance or from their payment info depending on each persons account.

Thanks for your inputs, yes the group solution will be the final step, i.e. joint ownership. In the meantime we will have to convert from L$ I am afraid.
