When ever I run second life my hard drive goes mad and never stops until I quit second life. It is not that I have not got a fast computer, dual core Athlon, 1Gb of memory and a Nivdia 7600 Gs video card. not that the CPU or graphics card would make any difference to drive access anyway. Do Sl normally make the hard drive go mad or is there something in the software that I ca change? I am wondering if it have something to do with my internet connection as my provider use band width shaping.
Thanks for any help, I hope this is the correct section.

When was the last time you defragged your HD? You could try clearing your SL cache the defragging your HD. I find that my HD gets noisy & thrashy running SL if my cache is over a week old.

i would say add one or two GB of ram and remove the system disk cache, it will greatly reduce your disk useage and stimulate the ram use of windows, also if you don't use a lot the search function in windows, or if you don't mind slower searches you can deactivate the disk indexing , if you don't use dos programs you can disable the 8.3 filename generation.

From: Adsym Ah When ever I run second life my hard drive goes mad and never stops until I quit second life. The amount of memory used by SL is largely dependent on the stuff thats around you and your draw distance. All those prim information, scripts, sounds, etc. need to be stored somewhere. Denser sims tend to take up lots of memory. Typically SL uses about 400Mb at a draw distance of 128m. Pushing it to 256m, it usually hits 600Mb -700Mb or so. Your system uses about 50Mb as overhead alone, just to run the operating system itself. So, it could be you're in quite a busy sim location. Running other software in the background is bound to cause it to hit your 1Gb memory limit. Do not however, switch off your virtual memory. A better solution is to set it to a fixed size, so that Windows doesn't resize it dynamically and cause some of the disk trashing whenever it needs more RAM. And just add 1Gb or so of RAM.

I was just gonna say that Also, be carefull about "just adding" more memory... If you have an AMD Athlon 64 processor, you can actually HURT your memory performance if you have memory sticks in all 4 memory slots. It's a known limitation of the processors integrated memory controller.
