Once you leave Help Island you can never return so be sure you've wandered through the tutorial machines and made good use of being able to learn undisturbed.
If you're ready to join the rest of the general population then approach a Mentor, Live Helper, or a Linden, and ask them for some landmarks of interesting places to go to. They'll be happy to point you in the right direction and all you have to do is click the blue Teleport button on the little Landmark card they give you.

Look around Help Island for the Various teleporters that will take you to the Main Map, There should be about Half a Dozen scattered about the Island. Take your time on Help Island first though, and get comfortable with the game mechanics, and Make a few contacts with the SL Mentors, they can help you on the Main Map also. When you land on the Main Map, you will land in one of a few Welcome areas. Take my advice and Leave those areas fairly quickly, you will find Much Nicer people the farther you get from them.
If you are Looking for an Urban Environment, there are a Few Places you can try. Midnight City has Great Night Life. Los Altos if you want more of a "Gangsta" theme. Caladon for Victorian Elegance.
There are Many Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Alternative Lifestyle Environments as well, Take your Pick. What you get really depends upon what you Want. In SL, If you can Imagine it, you can do it, and Chances are, some others have had a Go at something similar.
See you there. Angel.
