annoying nodding avatar

Apologies in advance if this is blindingly silly question, I'm very new to SL.

I have just noticed when using chat, that my AV nods her head up and down every time I hit he return key, even after a single space is typed. I never noticed this behavior before, as I spend most of my time looking at the back of her head, but I have not seen others doing it, so assume something is awry.

I'm assuming there is some key mapping going on linked to the return key that is and triggering the gesture, but I am running out of ideas of where to look. Even deactivating the 'yes' gesture, which appears to be the nod in question, has no effect.

Any suggestion would be very welcome.

I have no answers for you - but wanted to let you know mine does it to, and I have seen many others do it that do not have an AO (Animation Overide)

It is rare to see nodding avatars, but I think they all do (if you do not have an AO). The extent of the nodding appears to be linked to the shape size.

Glad to know I am not alone. It happens whether I use an AO or not. Even going back to the original AV I was born with: still the same!

I'm convinced it something to do with the typing animation that happens automatically when you chat, that somehow gets a short circuit, and only performs part of what it's supposed to do.
like just the lean forward then raise head, but with the typing bit missing.

Unfortunately I don't know enough about scripts, or where they are kept are to attempt to do anything about it.

It's now become like one of those annoying habits that people get, that once noticed seems much worse than it is.

Yup...the nodding is part of the standard avatar typing gestures and while we CAN turn off the 'playtypinganimation' in the debug settings.....it doesn't seem to fully effect the nodding. I notice it with mine sometimes.....but it seems random. I wear an AO and I think it may depend on how the poses are scripted in the AO. If the head is set to move with the camera view....I think typing will effect it as well. If the AO also overrides head movement...you wont get the nodding.
But....take heart... we all nod...we all look like we have some kind of weird muscle tick. lol

I've always liked that nodding. Maybe because I generally agree with whatever I say.

Can it be overridden or turned off? And if so, how?

Any priority 4 animation that animates the head and neck will stop the head nod. Many animations do not animate the head and neck so that the head follows the default behavior of looking at whatever you click on. Unfortunately this also allows the head to nod while chatting.

So the easiest fix is to find a 'stand', 'sit' and 'flying' animation that are priority 4 and make use of the head and neck. Then put these into your AO. You can usually preview animations from a vendor so try typing while you are previewing and see if your head moves.

I'm not aware of any debug option to turn head nods off.

Lucky. I sometimes disagree with myself.

HELP!

Thanks for all the replies, very illuminating; and humorous. At least I won't feel quite so peculiar when talking to people now. I will also be looking a lot more closely at AO's from now on.

another thing to try is is to alt click on who ever you are talking to, it will focus you on them so your head is not wandering..not sure if it will stop the nodding tho
