okay absolutely have no clue,
I understsnad the concept of mainland and Island,
but for the life of me I haven't a clue after searching till i'm blue in the face.
How the heck to you know if your located on what everyone calls the mainland or if your on someone's island?

Check the About Land, go to the Covenant page. It should show the Estate Owner, and if that is blank or Governor Linden, then you are on the mainland.
Alternatively, you could click on the World menu then the Estate/Region option and one of the tabs in there names the Estate Owner. Again, for mainland, it's either blank or it's Governor Linden.

Two things - First, when you search land, you have a combo box where you can select either mainland, private island, or both.
Second, wherever you are, if you look at "About Land", on the Covenant tab, if there is somebody listed there as Estate Owner, you are on a private island. This field shows (none) for mainland.

Lol the terminology goes back to the days when "mainland" was a single continent and all privately-held estates were their own little islands. Now "mainland" is up to four continents and some of those privately-held estates are continents themselves.
Best way to see mainland is just to zoom all the way out on your map; any land you see is mainland. Private sims don't generally show up until you zoom in a bit. Another way to see mainland is to search land, and filter for mainland only.
