Try right click the item and selecting detach.
If you can right click your avatar try doing Take Off / Detach All.
Have you tried doing Edit / Detach Object / and then click on any items shown as attached.
You might want to press F1 and read the help info there.
Your friend's advice to skip orientation didn't seem to work out too well for you.

If you gone through Orientation Island you'd learnt how to remove them Right click then detatch.

You're probably one of those who never read the manual.

From: Brenda Connolly You're probably one of those who never read the manual. yes and then when they are finished assembling this thing "faster" which took them 3 days longer then if they read the manual they say "hey look I got all these neat new free spare parts" 2 weeks later the bookshelf or whatever collapses .. (true story that one) here is another one Guy says after 5 minutes or so how long should i bake this lasagne ? I pick up the box it came in and read it .. and say "20 minutes at 425 degrees" he looks at me like i am some kind of genius.. ^^

From: Wilhelm Neumann "20 minutes at 425 degrees" Oh, man, I don't want to wait 20 minutes... hmm, 20 minutes times 425 degrees is 8500 degree-minutes, which can be expressed as one second at 510,000 degrees... that's sounds good. (Tick) There, done! Let's eat."

Now, really...
03-05-2007 22:08
Come on now. Did each and every one of you, when you signed up, really go painstakingly through each and every one of the orientation stations? Or did you scan to get a general idea, then plan on solving problems as they popped up? This guy's crime isn't failing to RTFM, it's asking people to solve his self-imposed problem instead of figuring it out himself.
Not sure why I'm talking about this, except that after the seventh or eighth self-congratulatory post I really wanted to smack someone.

I only read about half the stations when I started - and usually each one half way through. The biggest newbie moment for me was how to open a box - something that wasnt covered in the original tutorial area as far as I know. And yes I ended up wearing the box on my head.

. I spent a week on the orientation island so yes dont assume everyone doesn't read the info when i left orientation island i landed at that water whatever place waterhead? somehow i can't remember how i guess i clicked on a sign it gave me some landmarks which low and behold I knew how to use one was to a place called NCI which i went directly to and I lived at nci for about 4 weeks oh yeah and by the time i had hit the mainland i had already worked on my clothing and hair and shoes (it wasn't great but instead of the default avatar it was a step up) I left NCI after I had figured out how to build and went to the ivory tower of prims after that i bought a premium account and built a house etc .. (yes i learned .. i read the instructions and had great fun..) /shrug you asked hehe

When I created my main I don't remember Orientation Island. I remember Help Island, but nothing before. When I created my alt, I went straight through, cos of course i know all that stuff now.
Except my main had never used a HUD. Took me half an hour to work out to get rid of the damn thing.

Even before I signed up, I browsed through the knowledge base and several of the more popular SL blogs. Then I worked my way through Orientation Island and hung around the Help Island for a few days, plus read through even more of the knowledge base when I wasn't online.

In my inventory now each shoe (left and right) are in a separate box, I keep trying to rez them so I can open them but its not working. Can anyone help me at all? it always says rez failed. So I click on them and press wear, then they go into trash! I restore them and try the whole thing over again but to no avail. Please please please help me!!!

Those two boxes that came inside the original box that you rezzed? Those ARE your shoes. From your inventory, just right click on each and select "wear."
Also, be careful. The delete and wear functions are on adjacent lines. I can't tell you how many times I have sent an item to my trash instead of wearing it!
:\
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies. I clicked wear and the shoes were on but there was no color. It just looked as though my feet were deformed. lol. i'll check again today after work to see how they look.
Where are some cool Rockabilly themed places to hang out? Clothes, etc? I searched them but there are sooo many options.

I searched them but there are sooo many options. they probably have a second shoe that looks like the SL shoe icon find the entire envolope you got when you clicked the box and opened it and selected move to your inventory. YOu will likely find another set of shoes that looks like the little shoe icon that SL uses plus possibly a pair of socks and in some cases they even include a pair of pants in the underwear slot if the shoe is like a tall boot put it all on and voila its done. the Sl shoe is made so that is magically shrinks your foot so when it goes on your actual prim shoe will fit

One guy says he teleports out of Newbie Island immediately. Another says he stayed there for a week. I guess it averages out in cosmic terms.
And please, don't do the "I'm a man/woman, I... (do some boneheaded thing and its my birthright by chromosonal configuration to do so)"
Yes, I figure you were joking but.... it's an old joke.... and it was never that funny.
Now, if you had said, "I never read instructions, because I really like breaking stuff and getting frustrated," then THAT would be funny, because its true.
Newbies aren't necessarily stupid, nor impatient. Those are characteristics that are not unique to that category of user.
Glad you got yourself sorted out.
