Hearing things?

About a week ago, I was on my sky platform (500m in the air), minding my own business. I do share this platform with several friends, but none of them were there at the time. I suddenly heard this horrible screaming and shouting - sounded like a very angry woman shouting in a language that was not English. I quit all the other programs on my computer, thinking it might have been something coming from my browser or email. It kept going for about 2 minutes while I searched & searched for the reason and complained via IM to friends about it. There was no one within 300 meters - although my shop had people in it 475m below me - and the sound volume stayed steady wherever I walked. It was a mystery, I decided my time was better spent working than dwelling on it.

So, this morning, I am in the same sky platform, and Lords of Acid "P**sy" started to play. I did not have on the land stream, I turned it on and I heard both the stream plus the LoA song. This time I had friends up there and asked them if they heard it. They didn't. The song played all the way through and ended. All was quiet for about 20-30 minutes, then it started again! I asked my friends if they heard it, but of course they didn't. Again, we were at least 300 meters from anyone else. I was still puzzling over the occurance as I sent a customer an item, and as I dropped it into their inventory, the song suddenly stopped!!!

Can anyone tell me what's happening? I'm not on any medication, nor do I need to be (AFAIK). Please tell me why this is happening. I'd love to solve the mystery!

Well I wouldn't worry overmuch about your sanity, I've had weird things happen in-world too, as have my friends. If you own the parcel, try looking at object owners under About Land. Sometimes people leave harmless objects unintentionally, but I've had people leave nasty stuff on land I control just to annoy someone. Anyway check and see if their are any unauthorized objects on the parcel, and neighboring ones. If you have estate power, you can also check what scripts are running. I've located several hard-to-spot (and sometimes even non-existant) objects with nasty scripts running.

I actually thought I was going CRAZY when this started happening to me!! I think I finally figured out what it is, though. If you open someone's profile, either through search or through IM or calling card, and have the profile webpage set to auto load... if there's any media going on in that page it will start to play. And it will continue to play until you load another profile without media.

Its the only thing I can figure out so far!! But no, no sanity issues (this time )

Oooh! I bet this is it! I doubt it explains the screaming, but it might. I'll do some testing later.

For a long time I could hear farts in a SIM I was going to regularly. Nobody else could hear it in-world. I thought I was going bonkers!

I don't know what was causing this.

There are settings in the Preferences / Audio & Video tab for Distance Factor and Rolloff Factor. These are set with the sliders in the middle by default. Possibly you have changed these settings.

At the moment, these settings don't seem to be having an effect on my system, but they have had a pronounced effect in the past. With the "right" settings for these sliders, I used to be able to hear sounds from pretty much an entire sim. Not something one wants except to alleviate boredom.

It is also possible that a bug is making something make a fartlike noise; there are plenty of times that sound scripted objects that should have made an engine noise have instead made a sputtering noise.

Of course, you could have an attachment or HUD attachment that is making the sound, which you could test bydetaching all objects and HUDs.

Suzeanne: I had thought an attachment might have been the culprit, too. I stripped (just keeping a swimsuit on) before going there, no luck. But I'll try and tweak my audio preferences. Might be the solution -- after all, even with the beacons on, I couldn't find the source of the sounds. So they might have come from far, far away.

Instead of 'stripping' to check for attachments...(not that anyone objects to that method)...you could also go into your INVENTORY.
In the little Text Box at the top, just above the Tabs (All Items and Recent Items), type in the word WORN.
Your inventory will filter to show you all items of worn clothing and attached objects and HUDS.

The LoA song ABSOLUTELY without a doubt was in a customer's profile web tab - I went back & checked. I did have it set to load automatically.

Indeed, but the day was very hot. But yes, I use the "WORN" trick quite often, and you're right, it is very useful.
Also, there's a Detach function in the menu. I think it's in Edit. It comes in quite handy.

i can click on my sim owners profile an i hear like a movie coming from it like sound track an my puter locks up an i get sl security pop up hows that one lmao too freaky huh an its super loud too lol (i thought wow good one for nosey profile stalkers like me lmao odd thing is my sl hubbie an best buddie both dont get that when they click on it lol im the chosen one ! lol
