I'd like some reccomendations for a good color printer for photo reproductions. Preferably, a multi purpose unti the can scan as well as print.

Thanks in advance.

Let's brainstorm a little on how to relate this to SL so this thread doesn't get closed. What you're looking to do is print high quality renderings of scenes in SL, right? Yeah, I thought so.

Okay, now let's talk hardware. First, I wouldn't recommend a multi-purpose device. They can always do a lot of things, which is cool, but they never ever do any of them as well as stand alone devices do. Most of the ones I've seen have been really crappy, in fact. Get a printer and a scanner separately.

For high end printers, nobody beats Epson. Their inks are archival quality, so your photos will last forever (many inks degrade after a few years), and their printers operate with a proprietary electromagnetic system that forces each dot onto the exact right spot on the page. No one else has that technology.

For mid range printers, I'd recommend HP. When you dip below the top of the line stuff, the benefits of Epson quickly disappear. HP seems to be much better at making inexpensive printers than Epson is. At least that's how it was last time I checked. It's been maybe six months or so, so it's possible things could have changed. HP has pretty much been the leader in inexpensive printers for a good long time, I think, so even if Epson has improved their midrange line, HP is still always a safe bet.

For low end printers, well, just don't go there.

As for scanners, take your pick. I've got an HP Scanjet 4600, which I love. It's face-up kind with the clear top, so you can see what you're scanning. It's a few years old, but it still works really well. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore though. Prior to this one, I had a Visioneer, and it worked just fine too (had to replace it when XP came out). I really haven't seen much difference in scanners. Just avoid the really cheap ones like Lexmark, and you'll do fine.

Hope that helped.

Total agreement with Chosen; all-in-ones may be trendy but you just don't get the spec you really want. I've never been top notch with printers but my trusty old HP 970CXi does convincing photos. I went with Epson Perfection for my scanner, perfectly adequate for me at scanning maps for instance.

Chosen,

You're absolutely right!!!!! It's for printing and scanning SL snap shots!!!!!!!!! :)

And you're also right regarding not getting a multi-purpose machine as verified by all of my co-workers as well. I'm going to target the scanner as a first addition and the printer second. I'll check out the brands you mentioned.

Thanks again!

Dont forget to take into account the on-going running costs when you're buying a printer.
Some printers may look a great price but over here (Ireland) the set of inks for some cost more than the printers do.

I would recommend Epson also.
Their quality is good, and the running costs dont add up as much as other printers.

Have fun!
