Why was a notice sent inworld about instability in the grid, and to check some site called tinyurl.com? Is this a spoofed notice? If, not why not use the normal grid status url?

tinyurl is a very neat conversion system of changing a very long URL into a very short one using hex numbers. I use it a lot.

That said, someone using tinyurl could be sending spam or redirecting you to a malicious site. tinyurl.com isn't the destination - it's whatever original URL was converted.

LL has been using tinyurl addresses exclusively in official communiques in-world for months, not sure what the point of it is exactly since they're not replacing long addresses in the first place.

Given how many times I've seen this question come up in various fora in the last few days, it seems like a bad choice for LL to use tinyurls. It seems that many people aren't familiar with the tinyurl service or don't trust it.

if tinyurl.com goes out of business, those links won't work. Best not to use url shorteners except when absolutely needed in anything you want to be useful very far in the future.

Seems odd since LL uses http://tr.im/ which is very similar to tinyurl.com

Good advice.

One place where it often is "absolutely needed" is in the parcel media URL, which is capped at 255 characters. http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4321 <- shameless plug.

I'm still wondering why they didn't just create their own SL only service. The coding is simple to the extreme and requires minimal load on the server it is running on.
