Do I need to contact a mentor or should I begin to explore solo?
Today (in about an hour, in fact) I will be taking my boys to the movies. When I return, should I contact a SL Mentor and stay put on Help Island a bit more? Or should I just get out there?
Is there something beyond walking, flying and typing that I need before I head out? I have built a few pieces of jewelry.....but doodling with prims is about the all thats left for me to do on Help Island that I know of.
What do you, who have been here a bit longer, think?

If you feel ready to explore, I would go for it. I spent very little time on Help Island, maybe a couple of hours, and now have a shop. You can learn everything once you have left in your own time. Just try to remember that houses are people's property, so you don't find yourself in trouble. There are some threads around here on interesting places to visit, going on recommendations will give you a better view of what's out there than just flying around or tping randomly ) Also, visit Free Dove for lots of freebie goodies like clothes, hair, skin etc Dimple's Land, Gallii (115, 52, 32)

Well maybe SL is like real life there comes a time to break away from mum and dad and face the world for yourself. If you get stuck or got questions or want help/advice then ask another SL person, I do and I have never been turned away. I've been given great help and advice in SL. Pity RL not allways that easy. So my advice would be give it a try. Best wishes June
PS Hollywell what did you say yes to?

Go to the bottom of your screen and click the SEARCH button. Then click the PLACES tab and type in SHELTER. That is a nice social place for new players to help new players. Also click GROUPS and type in some key words of things your into. Lots of groups are open-enrollment and free to join.

If you feel comfortable with moving and looking around, then you really don't need Help Island anymore. As far as needing a mentor, only you can decide if you need that sort of support. There are several welcome places for new players - you can do a Find (Search) for The Shelter or NCI (New Citizens Inc) - both tend to have people there just for answering questions. Your options are many, so the main thing you need to decide are you the type of person to jump off the pier and learn how to swim, or read the manual first? Welcome to SL!

Go for it. If you make a mistake out there so what. Say "Oops. I'm sorry" , and move on. There's nothing to be afraid of out there.

Definitely go for it. If you want to build, start by going to the Ivory Tower - a complete building tutorial. Then go to a sandbox or two and try building there. I sometimes go to either Harbinger's or Dream sandboxes. Lots of free textures in both and you don't often see a griefer. For freebie items search in Places by typing in the word free. Yadni has a great place, Stillman, GNU, and many others. Everything like clothes, avs, textures, vehicles plus plus. Also under search there is an events tab - click on it and see what's happening in the world. There are classes which can teach you to build or script various items. I think that should keep you busy for a few hours If you need any help IM me in world. ( to IM someone click on Search and then the People tab. Type in the name and up will come their profile. At the bottom you will see IM - click on it and send a message. Good luck in your second life!

Hi , I spend a lot of time on help Island's helping out newborn's with the basic's and giving advice . My No1 tip is " Stay on Help island as long as you can untill you find your feet " Nothing can actualy prepare you for the real SL ( mainland ) But if you can walk, talk , Fly and know how to open the edit control and build ... Then your ready imo . The mainland has it's own Help island ( Public ) , It can get a bit busy at time's and you may end up in a cage from time to time , But you can still get help and advice form the loyal help island public regular's who are allways willing to help with polite question's . So , with all that said ... Go for it! ... be ready for some jaw dropping sight's and be aware that it will not take long befor you run into some " Adult content " . So try and make sure your boy's ( If they are quite young ) are not too close to your screen Good luck and have fun ... witch im sure you will

Thanks, everyone, I really appreciate the advise.
And...as for Shrek the Third, my 6 and 8 year old boys loved it...I could have waited until it came out on the boob tube a couple of years from now.
THX again

One suggestion: When you get to the point where you want to do any shopping - use the Search described above, lood under freebies, and go ransack the sites that offer freebies first. Don't spend more than L$1 on anything until you have exhausted them. First, you will be amazed at what is outthtere for free if you take the trouble to sort through the clearance racks. Second, you will get a better feel for value in SL - what you should be paying up for and what you shouldn't. And third, when you run across somebody selling stuff for lotsa lindens that is available for free, you will know you have found a rip-off artist of a type widely looked down upon and shunned in SL and will go elsewhere.

Also, at the top of this forum there is a thread of Top 5 Tips for the Newly Born you might want to peruse at your leisure. But for now, yeah! Get out there and explore! Check my in-world profile on the picks tab for some fun things to do. Talk to people. You'll be fine.
PS: Thanks for the hint on Shrek 3. I didn't see what the fuss was about with the first one and only watched the second under pressure from a friend with shaky taste.

I just want to personally thank everyone for making sure that I would do nothing else but be logged into SL all weekend! Your input was right on. The fact that the only three things that I needed to concern myself with were: 1. To keep an eye out for my kids to make sure that they can't see the computer screen. 2. There are many different nationalities (and therefore languages) in SL...is there a language school in SL? 3. That one naked dude who kept bumping into me at the freebie Dungeon Everyone that I spoke to in world was very pleasant and extremely helpful. I have already recomended it to others to join. I am sure that I will eventually run into a real arsehole, but what I have experienced so far has been wonderful....and fun. Thanks to everyone, again Aph
