Every once in a while, when I buy an expensive item, the Notecard will advise making a copy in inventory "in case you lose the original". More specifically, they usually refer to dropping an item on land (where allowed) and accidentally getting booted off the system.
If I dropped an item I owned on someone's land that allows one to do so and I suddenly got logged off the system, would that item still be there when I got back? Would another person (especially the land owner) be able to pick it up and put it in their own inventory? Would it be gone out of my inventory when I returned?
A little confused (and concerned). I tried searching, but couldn't find a suitable combination of search terms to find out what I needed to know.

Sometimes the system has problems and eats items you try to rez- they`ll just 'disappear' unless you have a copy of it in your inventory (When you rez copyable items there will always be one left behind in your inventory, though)
Also sometimes people will purchase an item then for whatever reason SL may crash on them and the item will not be found in inventory..in which cases just ask the creator to give you a new one. (Ask immidiately, not days later)
If you rez something on someone elses land, that person can not pick it up and take it as their own, they can either leave it there or return it to you. some people have auto return on and that`s where your objects will be returned to you automatically.
The only way someone can pick up your items are: a. deeded items can be taken by officer of the group land you deeded the item to b. you grant someone "modify rights" c....there may be more, i dont know. But if you innocently leave something behind the most they can do is return it. they can not take or delete it.

OK, that answers all my questions. Thanks! I guess the vendors are probably invoking some CYA principles based on the cost of the item. I'm usually careful to copy anything I can and have a "backup" folder in my inventory where I keep all originals, sorted into folders. I can see where someone might be slightly miffed to find that their new 2000L$ horse vanished in thin air. I know I would.

Well you can only make copies if the item is copyable, and like I said..if it is..when you rez it, it ALWAYS leaves a copy behind in your inventory The thing you need to be careful about is no copy items, if the grid is being screwy its best not to rez it. 99% of the time hair is sold copyable but still always make an original copy of hair.
