client side is from 8 fps to max 30.

do you have an extreme number of differing textures on your island?

Lots of Complex textures + Lots of Avatars seem to be the biggest performance robbers

My frame rate dropped the last few weeks back to 2fps after 20 minutes in game. After some time it became normal again, followed by a 2fps period again.

Someone posted in the blog comments that he set the video memory lower than the actual memory on the video card. When I changed my video memory from 256Mb to 128Mb the frame rates are normal again, like it used to be.

You're using Vista, and therein lies your problem. Support for OpenGL is shakey in Vista-- and if I understand it correctly--what support there is for it is eaten up by Vista itself when it draws your desktop. (And yes, unlike other versions of Windows, Vista draws ALL of your desktop, even when you have SL fully maximized on top of it.) All in all, it is not unusual for Vista users to report a 50% drop in fps. (When I put Vista on my laptop, I saw a similar drop in framerate.)

That said, there are things you can do to improve SL performance under Vista. I suggest you post your question in the Tech Forum where you're likely to get clearer answers than I can possibly provide before my first cup of coffee is finished.

There have been significant problems with the grid connections, most noticeable in time dilation for me. I haven't have many problems with fps. Last night, for example, I was pulling 72 fps in a sim that was running a time dilation of .38. Still, if you're actually trying to move, and not (as was I) just dancing, TD can be a factor in FPS. Still, check into setting Vista compatibility for SL. It makes a huge difference.

(And yes, I concur. Vista (on my laptop) is much more stable for me too. But installing it on a custom rig like the one I use for SL is too problematic at this point to make it worth my while just yet. I'm waiting for SP2 before I upgrade that one.)
