(This is not really intended as a 'general topics' sort of post, hopefully it won't be locked)
Firstly, I want to congratulate Anshe and her company for hitting the million dollar mark!! Her company is now valued at $1,000,000 USD.
My question to the residents who've created businesses in SL:
How many of you are doing much better (profit & asset wise) than you initially expected or projected when you joined SL?
How many of you came into SL 'just to check it out' and now are doing so well SL is a majority of their income?
Income aside, how many of you started with SL as a hobby, and now have a full range of skills that the knowledge learned is now your career?
I'm not really interested in hearing money figures with these questions.. I'm interested in hearing about people that came into SL 'just to check it out' and now it has grown for them that SL is a major part of their life, their career, their business. Grown to the point where you would have never have fathomed you'd be doing so well.

Ever Yours,
Mrs. Showdog Tiger I don't think it'll get locked. I used 4 question marks in my OP. And hopefully a survey amongst residents to get a positive concensus regarding successful entrepaneurs will be allowed.

Wow congrats.
I`m one of these:
"How many of you came into SL 'just to check it out' and now are doing so well SL is a majority of their income?"
I just joined to play around, sounded too interesting to pass up- Ya know, interacting with real people virtually. I started making tattoos for myself because I *knew* I could and did not want to pay someone for a custom when I could do it myself. Someone was kind enough to tell me how to import it and turn it into clothing. And before long I opened a small shop and they were selling.
Now adays I was able quit my RL job, so my source of income is from the sales I make in game, and I also do graphic type work for RL people such as web sites, tape/cd covers, logos, etc.
So SL did change my life, and I love it, it`s fun to create.

Congrats to Anshe. I think it's wonderful that she has done so well! As for me, I did just join SL to check it out at my husband's urging. I never intended to sell anything let alone attempt to build a business. I've been an artist all of my life and have painted professionally for over 30 years, and I am thrilled that SL enables me to use my talents in a new (albeit different) way. So yes, I'm doing far better than expected. I cover the costs associated with my land and whatnot. I'm also getting paid to create which is a wonderful thing for an artist who has been dealing with the RL art world for many years and the ups and downs that come with that. I'm currently taking a break from my career as a research historian, and this has been a fun way to be creative, meet amazing people, and grow my talents in a new direction. I have no aspirations to be the next Anshe Chung, but I'm having fun...and making a buck or two while doing it so life is good. Most importantly I have a horse and a castle. Two things I could not otherwise own in RL. What's not to love! Best, ~Ari

I'm doing better then I thought I would, I make some nice money (not enough to live on, just some extra cash here and there) by selling catgirl skins. I do enjoy it, and I think the pleasure of seeing people enjoy my skins outweighs the lindens that I've earned, but that's not what's being discussed now, is it. ^^;

Same here Kira- I didnt continue doing what I do for the money, its just good to be providing some nice content to people. I`ve made a lot of cool friends an met a lot of neat people too. You really do develop a "fan base" so to speak of people who love your stuff and await for your next releases, so that keeps me going.
As long as peolpe keep buying, i`ll keep providing.
