Say i was going to a dress up party in SL,
how easy is it for me to switch between my current AV and the AV i want for the party?
how do i save my current AV so i can switch afterwards?

Also if i started to create costumes for these sorts of occasions(say a pirate or a robot or spiderman for example), is it better to create them as an outfit people can put on or to create a whole AV?

You need to make folders, and put parts of the avatar/costume into it. First, you probably want to save the outfit you have on. Right click on yourself, and select appearance. Down at the bottom of the window that opens there should be a button that says "Create Outfit". Click on it and then another box opens up. There will be boxes to check next to everything you are wearing....skin, eyes, clothes, attachments, etc. Once you check them all and click ok, it will make a folder with all of that stuff copied (if copyable) into a folder in your inventory.

You can also make a new folder (open inventory, create, new folder) and put all the accessories you want your avatar to wear in it. (eyes, shape, skin, hair, clothes, attachments....don't forget anything). Then, if you right click on the folder and select "Replace Outfit", everything in the folder will be worn. It's a quick way to drastically change your avatar's appearance.

The folders system is far quicker/easier/cheaper than creating another account.
I found that trying to optimise on folders contents, for example using the same hair across all, I'd leave out the hair in all but the 'failsafe' one, I'd come to grief sometimes when changing outfits (I prefer dragging the folder to my avatar); it sometimes 'forgets' the hair.
Experiment, enjoy :)
