Stupide Newb Question--Heavy Mode?

Sorry, I know this is probably a really stupid question, but what does the Heavy Mode above my head mean? *blush* Just can't figure it out... I hope it doesn't mean something bad. XD

If it is above your head you may have inadvertently gotten into some group or other. Right-click on your avatar, click on Groups in the pie menu that comes up, and see if you are in a group that confers that "title." Then decide whether you want it or not.

Does it appear right above your name and inside the "name bubble"?

If that's the case, it's your active group title. Right-click on yourself and pick "Groups", then select ";(none)" and click "Activate".

For the most part group titles are used as "vanity tags" :). Groups and roles can have a certain meaning (permitting access to land, or allowing you to build on a plot when others can't, etc) but for most groups and most every-day use it's mostly about the title above your head.

As for how you ended up with it: when someone invites you into a group, it automatically sets that new group as the active group :).

I set my preference to never display tags back in '04 and have not ever wanted to change it.

Under Edit/Preferences/General Tab you can choose not to ever have your Group Tag show.

Works for me.

It is hidden from everyone, however you can never hide your name (only from your view).

Same here, when in crowded areas all those tags drive me nuts.

Yes. Still works the same, but you and everyone else don't have to look at it. Activate the group you need whether or not the tag is visible and you are all set.

Yep. Except for one place where I Volunteer and wear a tag for Identification, I don't use them. I hide my name on my screen, use small text on others names and have it fade after a few seconds. I don't like all that clutter on my screen either.
