Hello all, just a little query.
I was recently renting an apartment in a marina style sim, when one of the owners just so happened to pass away in RL last weekend. This tragic event occurred at a rather irksome time for me; my rent was due the following day, but with Lindex purchases down over the same weekend I was unable to cough up on time.
The very next day my house was empty, and the deceased man's business partner informed me that all my items had been returned to my inventory. As all of these objects were set to the group I certainly didn't doubt him that this would be the case.
Three days later I am yet to see any of the lost items in my inventory. Despite numerous requests this man has basically informed me that they are lost for good, and I should just deal with it. This amounts to a loss of around 7000-8000L in purchases, not an inconsiderable sum.
My question is this: do I just have to deal with this like he said, or is there any kind of action I can take to at least seek some compensation for my losses. If people run these sims as a form of business, then are they not accountable for anything that goes wrong?
I would appreciate any feedback on this issue.

Hi
Allthough I like many will understand your situation I dont believe theres a lot you can do, certainly with Lindens view of resident disputes theres very little other that wave your stuff good bye.
I suspect that the sim " business partner" deleted the items rather than return , most likely due to not wanting to return the property which may have been in there business partners name.
Not too sure ......
but its pretty certain theres very little you can do.

Do be sure to double check your lost and found and go through every item there. Returning a large number of items in a block occasionally attaches them all together in a temporary prim "set" under the name is a randomly chosen object in the pile.
I found the entire contents of my rental attached to a chair in my lost and found once, and simply named "object" another time.
It's always a good idea to go back through the lost and found and clean it out anyways =)

Did you get system messages saying such-and-such item has been returned? Or do you have just the partner's word for it?
If you didn't get the system messages it is likely they never did get returned. But there's really no way that I know of to prove whether the partner deliberately deleted them or not.

The parcel "Delete" has a little quirk: if you're deleting a no copy item that doesn't belong to you then "Delete" just acts as "Return" so in that sense estate/land owners can never delete anything no copy that belongs to you. (The exception is that if someone has mod rights for you then they can actually truly Delete anything you have rezzed) That said, returns aren't very reliable and they do tend to just go missing. The first thing to do would be to Edit menu / Preferences - Network tab, Clear Cache and log on to a quiet, empty sim and let your entire inventory refetch (just type anything random in the inventory search bar and wait for the title to stop saying "Fetched x items" . All items that were returned would also return to your invetory as one coalesced item. So if someone returns a fern, a bed and a prim you rezzed, you'll have one item in your Lost and Found named either "fern", "bed", or "object". Never delete anything that ever shows up in your lost and found (although we now have a little new icon of a stack next to coalesced items, although I wouldn't put too much faith on that working all of the time) no matter what the name of it is. Find a quiet little plot where you can rez any item in your Lost and Found (a sandbox isn't necessarily the best place for this since they tend to crash rather often which could make everything go *poof*) and you'll find that all your posessions rez the way they were originally put out inside of the house. Estate owners can do whatever they want to their tentant as a general rule and that includes running land scams, extortion or general griefing.
