Earlier this month I bought a parcel of land that I wanted, but it put me over my level and into the next tier. I've just sold a parcel which brings me right down to exactly the maximum of the level I was at before. I know that for this month I will have to pay the higher level since my peak usage was just into that level.
My question is, after this month tier is paid will my account automatically go back to the previous tier? Or do I have to do anything else, i.e. tell LL, or make some change, click some button, etc? My concern is that the level I'm at this month is significantly more expensive than the next one down, where I 'ought' to be now that I've sold that one parcel. I can't afford to pay another month at this level, especially considering I don't have that amount of land.
(As an aside, IMHO that's the real unfairness in land pricing - go over your tier by 1m and they bill you the full amount at the next level up. It ought to be billed by the m but base the per-m rate on the tier level... grrr)
Anyhow that's my concern. I have a week before my tier is due, I know that this month it will be high, but I want to make sure that next month it will return to the lower level. Thanks!
-Atashi

You're only charged for the land you own.

From: Beebo Brink You're only charged for the land you own. Or tier donated to a group, where it doesn't matter if it's used or not. To the OP: https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/account/landfees.php make sure that the sum of "m² owned" and "m² donated" (minus 512m² for the premium) puts you within whatever tier level you want to be in.

From: Beebo Brink You're only charged for the land you own. Ah if only that were true! Then I'd have nothing to complain or be concerned about. Unfortunately, if you own 8704m you are charged tier for 16384m. From what has been said though, I gather that the answer to my question (When you tier down is it automatic?) is "yes" -- so if I tier down to 8192m then next month that's what I will be charged for, and not 16384m. Thanks for the feedback. -Atashi p.s. the numbers I have used in my example are above and beyond the 'free' 512m that comes with premium membership.

You then click the circle of the tier level you want and then click the save changes button. Your tier will not automatically revert. You have to do it manually.

No, the land tier selection won't automatically revert, but you won't be charged for the higher land tier unless you own that much land. Not sure what purpose the tier selection serves, but it's not for billing evidently.

The following month I was hit with land tier fees. I called and complained to LL and they told me that I need to edit the land use fees page on the website. Perhaps they've changed their policy, but thats how it was last summer.

That's good to know - I've been misled by that page into thinking you have to manually tier back down, and have misinformed others this way. Thanks Regan. zk From: Regan Turas No, the land tier selection won't automatically revert, but you won't be charged for the higher land tier unless you own that much land. Can a Linden weigh in on this one? I believe you have to manually change it or they will charge you the previous month's level even if you are not holding the land. You are paying for the priviledge of being able to own more, whether you buy it or not. I wonder how much extra cash they make by people not knowing you have to set your own lower tier level?

Odd, just last month I downgraded and now the my new payment is correct, even though my button is much higher.
The main point of that page so when you buy more land you won't get the "this will put you over your tier" error on the buy page.

I've never even looked at that Land Use Fees page before, so shame on me, but having looked at it, it was very clear and easy to understand. (I've seen the normal "Land Pricing & Use Fees" of course but not the one that you get from "My Account" . What was concerning me was after having sold the land I needed to get rid of, the My Account page was showing "8192 meters available for purchase" out of the "16384" level. Now that I've followed your steps, it's showing "0 meters available for purchase" which is what I was hoping / expecting. -Atashi
