I guess this explains why the price of land is so high, despite the fact that you can't log in, you won't get your stipend and you can't tie up your furry friend and tickle him with a slot machine handle anymore.

*grins* Umm.. yeah. Actually, it explains why the support sucks and why getting things to work in SL is a craps shoot. (OMG, did I just use an illegal term in a publicly viewable place?!) It also explains why no one is celebrating the fact too, doesn't it? ;)

They can have my slot machine handle when they pry it from my cold, dead paws... er, hands!

I still want to know what percentage of that seven million are either alts or people who tried SL a few times and never came back.

I think the only marginally accurate population statistic is how many are online at a time. I consider SL as having about 50,000 residents at the MOST based on what I've seen the "online right now" numbers stack up.

If you look at the stats for population log-ins, you'll notice that only a little over a fifth of those 7 million have bothered to log-in in the last 2 months. When you consider that of the 1.7 million who actually HAVE logged-in, probably a good third of those are alts, you get a number much closer to what might be considered 'regular' user of the system... something around a million or so, I would guess.

Which leaves us with something like 6+ million unused or neglected accounts clogging up the system.

Swell.

Keep those milestones comin' guys.

April had 836,000ish new residents, and 1.11 million people logged in during the last 30 days so the number of active residents who are older than a month is only 276,000 which is fairly close to the 293,000 number who spent at least L$1 in-world.

That would put the average time anyone spends on SL at just under 2 hours/day.

I wonder if its even that many.

That logged on in the last 60 days stuff includes all the new accoutns of peopel who quit within 60 days too. Considering how many new accoutns there was in that time - It must be a high nember in itself.

If theres really a million active users youd think the peak number online would be higher.

My wild guess is the active population of Second Life (more than 5 hours a week) is only 10 times the peak number who log in.

I would say that the actual population is at least over 100K because at any one time there are at least 23K logged in right now at max at 50K just about. So figure some people only play on certain days and some only on the weekends. It must be near 100K at least then.

PS - 1000th post, hurray!!

Land is actually cheap it's the council rates (tier) that kill you.

I agree that it's the tier that people need to be concerned with more than the one time price they pay unless they are buying a huge plot. Land prices on the front page are higher than they've been lately though.

What would you rather have them advertise?
Second Life: Now with 7 miilion unique, ununique, abandoned and neglected registered users... counting alts and bots

Oh I suppose that WoW with its 16 million registered users always has 15.9 million logged in right now right? and no duplicates, no doubled up 10 day trials and definately no gaming of the system right?

What you all are complaining about isnt worth the cheese spread in your undies. if you got real issues vioce them out and lets discuss them, if you got nothing to do but idle complain about the WAY THE INDUSTRY IS. then keep it to yourself. Cause you arent going to change a thing!

You are right LL will pick the bigger number since they are trying to gain corporate interest.

However -

I dont think WOW has 15.9 million active accounts. I think thats the number of accounts they have had since the game started? Including those who closed their accounts.

The main difference is for WOW you have to pay for an account. Thus their numbers are tied to amount of accounts paid for. I wonder how many current paying suscribers they have. But this numbers fairly easy to find for them.

In Second Life, there is only 80.000ish premium accounts - So its much harder to know how many people actually play.

I would think it could be estimated using average playing time number calculated against the average number of Accounts logged in.

For Example, if 40,000 people are online on average throughout the day and people play 1 hour a day on average, you would need 960,000 people.

If you use the 7 million number and 40,000 online average per day you get an average Online time of about 9 minutes.

Every five minutes in WoW, a new character called "ghfjfgfhjrefdzxsd" or whatever joins, spams some gold site to people in whispers, and gets banned.

It's hardly a sign of massive popularity.

That's not cheese spread, sweetie, that's Pie

My list of complaints is rather lenghty, perhaps I'll save it for another thread.

I wouldn't rather they advertised anything, actually, but give me what they've already advertised; a stable reliable product capable of being scaled to accommidate the teaming, unwashed masses.

I could give a rat's buttocks about WoW or any other game. since I can play all of those, regardless of how many people are online at once.

Every five minutes a new alt named "ghfjfgfhjrefdzxsd InsertLastNameHere" joins SL, scams for some linden, and gets banned. Only here they also try to crash the grid.
