Hi,
where do i find a record of my IM conversations and is there a record of general chat stored somewhere?

Look in
C:\Documents and Settings\You Local User Name\Application Data\SecondLife\Your SL Name
Unless you have changed the path in the preferences. Hope that helps! =D

Thanks, but i just searched my entire drive for a folder called "application data" and i do not have one!

I think you have to enable "Search System Folders" to find that folder on your hard disk.
You can check the location in Edit / Preferences / Communications
Chat and IM are only logged if you set the checkboxes in the Prefences. The preferences page also allows you to set a different location for the logs.
Chat will be logged to a file named chat.txt
IMs will get logged in separate by individual avatar or group IM

While logged in to SL,
Open Edit/Preferences/Communication tab. Check to see that the boxes to Log Chat and to Log IM are ticked. I also tick the "show timestamp" and "show date" boxes. Makes it easier to find stuff in the log files.
You can set whatever path you like for your logs, if you don't like the default.
Inside the "chatlog" folder on your hard drive, you'll see folders for each of your avatar accounts, if you have more than one. The files in those folders will be .txt files. There's one for each person you've IM'd, and one called chat.txt for all the local chat.
I trim off the older stuff from chat.txt every three or four months and paste it into a separate .txt file for archiving. Otherwise, chat.txt can get far too large and unwieldy.
