Avatars find me in SL - how?

I've had two different kinds of incidents: 1) An avatar was able to find (or track) me and showed up at my precise location. He is on my contact list but I had never disclosed that location as one I visited, it is not a pick in my profile, and we were not in communication at the time. 2) An avatar I had only had a discussion with and never met visited my new home in sl. This location is not mentioned in my profile, and I had not given the location to him.

I am puzzled about how these events were able to take place, and it makes me feel a bit vulnerable. I will appreciate any help in understanding this...

Thanks,

Zoozyq

There's a chance you have "Find me on map" enabled for this person on your friends list. I do it myself for my closer friends... It's pretty much an open invitation for them to pop in on you at any time. (^_^)y

Two things come to mind. First, you may have inadvertently givrn that person mapping privileges for you, check their name in your friends lisy and uncheck it if necessary.

Also, the open source nature of SL has made it possible for someone to script devices that can track you wherever you go, unfortunately. I don't know if there are ways to defeat them.

Unless there is a new one out, they had to start in the same sim as you and a quick double tp will usually lose the tracker.

I don't remember if there are trackers that will hide in prims.

Are you wearing anything that the person gave you? If so take it off and let someone who knows scripts look at it.

1)
a. Ask mutual friend, "Hey, do you know where Zoozyq is?"
b. Guess, based on knowledge of your habits and likes.
c. You have "show my location on Map" enabled, at least for this person.
d. He's an alt of someone who did know where you were.
e. Chat bug. Check items you are wearing, especially if they are gifts from this person.

2)
a. You told him your home sim, or enough info about it for him to guess, either in your profile or in your conversation, or both combined.
b. He knows Guy#1
c. He's an alt of someone who knows your home location.
d. Chat bug, probably combined with him being an alt of the person who planted it on you.

Outside possibility: Your PC has been hacked and contains keystroke recorder spyware that's sending info to someone(s) else.

One more way, if you take a picture and give it to them, it has the sim name and location not only in the default name, but in the description as well.

May be this person are using DALE's Glass Viewer.

One feature of this viewer is "Chat Source Logging".

Take from Dale's Viewer Page:

"The viewer can log the source of chat messages. It will log the owner of speaking objects, as well as the chat source's location. For IMs, it's capable of giving the exact position of the IM's source on the grid, even if it's nowhere near the one who receives it. This feature is enabled by checking the "Log owner and coordinates" checkbox in the chat history window."

Who are these people who are so popular that other avatars are chasing them around? I get the occasional hello from friends, but nobody actually follows me from place to place like the paparazzi.

There are some 3rd party search engines that catalog all kinds of stuff including land parcels; if the other avatar uses a 3rd party search engine and put your name in it, it's possible that it'll come up with a parcel you own. I've seen this a few times, in properties that are *not* toggled for 'show in search' (meaning they do not show up in the SL searches) that 3rd party search engines will catalog them. Even if they don't specifically identify a parcel you own, they could identify prims you own, and anyone searching for you would note that a bunch of prims you own in a given sim would hint that you own land in that sim.

Picks ...

Since your picks are often of places you go to , its easy to find you there.

Groups ...

If you are a member of a group and display it on your profile, they can find the group held land through the group info information.

When I was newly partnered, several really strange quasi-stalking incidents happened very soon afterwards.

Prior to us becoming exclusive, my partner worked at a club where one of his "duties" was to dance with unescorted ladies. Several were quite taken with him. Needless to say, there were some "unhappy campers" when he announced our exclusivity.

In each case an "unknown" woman (different ones each time) seemingly just dropped out of the sky wherever we happened to be (and we went to a LOT of places in those days; didn't just stay in one spot) and immediately began hitting on my partner. This happened once while we were in a Halloween maze and when he did not respond to her advances, she rezzed a yacht (yep, a yacht) in the maze, trapping us and others who were trying to make our way through as she tp'd out. Interestingly, a millisecond after that, I got an IM from a "friend" from the club I had not heard from in months asking how things were with me and my Partner. Hmmmmmm.....

For awhile I was determined to find out who these women were and did a little "sleuthing" of my own. Then I decided it was their problem...and eventually the "events" stopped.

There are some bizarre people in SL.

It could be that this avatar had a friend who used to stay in the place where your house is now, or used to visit a store that was there, and he had a landmark to the area. Things change frequently in SL: people move, stores move, sometimes we forget where the landmark goes and decide to try it out, and end up in a stranger's house by mistake. Nothing to worry about.

Don't forget coincidence? A lot of my friends and I have similar interests (duh), so often end up at the same live music shows or games or events or stores or whatever. Put 100 people in the same sim and you might know one of them. ;)

I was at Blaze the other day and my radar popped up a name I know more from music events, turns out she works there.

If you spend some time in SL, you quickly learn it's a LOT smaller than it appears to be.

The best was when a friend IM'd me out of the blue asking "how do you know" so-and-so? He'd recognized me in a portrait that an artist had done for me months before when they were hanging up the artist's work in his gallery. :)

Which doesn't mean they aren't using some technological means, but don't most people have better things to do with their time?

There was an application for sale at one time but i think it was banned by LL. But that doesnt dismiss the fact the application could still be used maybe. Here is information on how it works

*****************************************************

If you're waiting an answer for the question "Where are people and what are they doing?",wondering your friend's or partner's location, worrying about people whom disabled map permission to you..........................................

Forget all of these, and don`t worry any more!

Why?

Because,Where Are You is here for you..!

Where Are You is a little and trusted software which works outside SL on your computer and requires SL account usage. You can find any person`s location via typing their first and last name if they`re online..

This is a little application which works outside Second Life via similar protocols with original viewer.

On your computer .Net Framework or Mono environment should be installed before running the application.

It's easy to use, just you need to type the password for the account which you want to login to the system and then do the search.

Two avatar location information are given to you.
Firstly, you can type any SL avatar's key(UUID) on Main Account box and you can get the results via instant message in-world or message box can appear in application.
Also if you have typed any avatar key, that avatar will receive teleport offer from the bot after it has found the location of the person who's being searched for.

If you haven't typed any avatar key, message box process will continue and two message boxes will appear. At first box,the coordinates of the avatar you're searching for,at another that avatar's region name will be shown. For this instance,in-world information isn't necessary.

Location finding depends on non-inventory transfer.Bot sends empty inventory item to avatar whom is chosen and system automatically declines it.
You can see the example here:
http://www.websiteremovedforprotection/screenshots/6.JPG
This maybe not sound cool but, actually the fastest way to resolve the location.
For example, same resolving thing can be done via group invitation offer, but if that avatar changes his/her location and then accepts or declines the offer, bot will find the new teleported location.

For SL account,i advice you to use an alt account,so any mistrust situation won't occur and you'll keep your online status with your main account.
When you send me your alt account's first and last name,i'll dig them into application and will send it to you after get paid 3000L$.

For the last,i want to warn you that i won't be responsible for usage of application, and all responsibility will belong to owner/user of the application, also possible technical problems in SL can be reflected to application too..

==========================================

I reported this application to LL a few months back . I heard it was banned but what amount of banning has been done i have no idea.
There is always some goober out there making stalking tools.. Just watch your back lol'''

That's false. LL changed the behavior server-side and so the software you mentioned didn't work anymore, nor does other software that uncovered that undocumented behavior, like Dale Glass viewer reportedly.

IM's contain the location of the sender, and LL recently changed it so if the sender isn't an object, that information gets zero'd out before it's sent to you.

This change only took place a few weeks ago, so in my opinion it's arguable that since the system was originally designed for people to see each other's locations, there may still be other ways that haven't been patched up.

One possibility that still stands is if you used an attached object to IM someone. Or like someone else mentioned, the llGetObjectDetails thing, I dunno if that's "fixed" or what.
