On some people it says 'Member' and others have it user-defined I think.

I don't want mine to say member, even though I just bought premium. Thanks!

The title is from a group, and you can wear it or not when you have that group activated. I never wear them.

The text above your head, if any, is a group tag. It's related to the groups you belong to and which you have active. You can change this by right clicking on your avatar, choosing Groups from the pie menu, then highlighting either 'None' (if you want nothing except your name) or the group tag you want to show. Click Activate, close the window, and you should be good.

I think what you're seeing is just the title given to a person when they join a group. One of the defaults is "member". Even if you join groups, you have the option of turning off your group label in the menus. Go to "Preferences", then "General", then check "Hide my group title".

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that changes made in Preferences only affect the user. That is, if you choose to hide your group tag in this manner, you won't see it anymore, but others still will.

Does anyone know for sure?

I believe it hides the group title from everybody. Since the other checkbox says "Hide my name on my screen". If it were only for you, then the title option would say "Hide my group title on my screen"... but it does not.

You can select no group as your title by right clicking on your avatar, selecting groups, clicking on the word none in the list of groups that appears, and then pressing the activate button.
