Checking if friends are online

When I'm at work and missing my second life I like to use the Friends Online feature on secondlife.com to see who's about. If I have a recent IM-to-email from them I can chat (a bit clunkily) via email.

Now that Friends Online has been 'temporarily disabled' (again) I was wondering what other ways I might use to keep in touch.

Has anyone ever set up or knows of something that will let you add your SL friends to your normal Instant Messaging client (Yahoo or MSN or AOL or whatever)? Then you could catch to them when not in-world.

Any thoughts as to how I might go about this if I wanted to write this from scratch?

You could ask them in game if they have an address for MSN, ICQ, Yahoo or AOL... and add them manually there. I have some of my SL friends on my IM (I run Trillian Pro, so I only need one program for MSN, ICQ, Yahoo and AOL. It is pretty straight forward and doesn't has all the "bells" of the original programs, but I don't need those anyway).

I know that Lineage II has support for MSN build in. But it crashed a lot and was not compatible with MSN for PDA's.

Morwen,
Thanks for your reply. I do that for some of my friends that I've known longer and that are happy to divulge their IM addresses. But not everyone wants to do that.

It would just be nice to be able to interact with SL from the normal 2D internet - so you can still keep in touch from a pc that can't run SL (or where your work doesn't allow you to install SL).

If SL is going to be more widely integrated within the existing web I would expect someone to start developing this sort of interaction.

Well it would be useful if LL could just enable "Friends online" once more.

Is friends online ever coming back to this website? It was pretty well the only useful thing here...well besides the occasional peek at the forums...
