Altho you can email a person a reply IM inworld by replying to an IM they had sent you that was subsequently sent to your email, I don't believe there is a way for you to initiate an IM to someone in world thru email without them first IMing you. Once they have IM'd you tho you can email them an IM anytime by replying to the email of their IM.
LOL, hmmm... does that make any sense?

It is possible to send and IM to Email if you have set up a device in SL to recieve the email and forward it to your friends. Max Case sells a device that does this for about L$26 (practially nothing) called Email-2-IM. It works great. Get it at Outpost Iota, Green (189, 167, 23)
There are several other makers of similar devices in world. I believe they all require that your friends addresses be configured in the device in advance.

Replying to IMs that got to your email only works for so long I think. The key it uses for the return email address is some random looking thing for the latest IM conversation, which seems to go "stale" after a few days.
