Spam Received After SL Signup

When I signed up for SL about a month ago I opened a new email account for my SL name with earthlink. The email .com that I use is a company acquired and run by earthlink so new accounts can only be added by existing account holders. I have this new account and three others at that .com. I used the new account only to receive emails from SL support and blog. I gave the account to nobody except SL. Recently I have begun to receive three to four spam emails per day on this account from names such as Rodrick Evelyn, Fair, Lyons. The same spams were not received on any of my other accounts. Therefore I can only surmise that somehow the spammers got my email address from SL.

I don't expect SL to readily acknowledge that somehow email addresses are getting out to spammers. Does anyone else have a segregated email account where they can tell if they have had a similar experience? The key word is a segregated account--used only for SL.

I've been on SL for over a year and my email provider lets me create 'disposable addresses' for spam tracking and control. Like you, I've only ever used this email for Second Life and nothing else, but unlike you I have never gotten a single piece of spam...

And this is even after hackers stole Second Life's account database, which, of course, included user email addresses.

I noticed a dramatic increase in an otherwise relatively low-spam email account one or two days after signing up for SL. Hardly "hard" evidence, but it was interesting and noteworthy to me at least.

You might also have 'IM to email' enabled and what you think is spam is messages and objects in game sending IM's and it heads straight for your email.

I'll often get random names popping up in my email because of groups I'm in or someone messaging me.

I've never gotten any spam on any address that I've given to LL.

You sure your system is clean & secure, Electron?

Did you go to one of those questionare pay places?
One of the names I recognize from past non SL experiences thats why I refuse to fill out questionares for Lindens..
They literally flooded the email I have with all sorts of spammy request, etc.
I made mistake of giving them my phone number so now I get strange phone calls and I am on the no contact list

I also used a (then) segregated e-mail account and received no spam until I started using it as my regular e-mail address, giving it out to everybody. Luckily I have haven't had a single spam e-mail get through my filter, or had a real e-mail get blocked. I <3 gmail.

....I gave the account to nobody except SL.

U blame LL here because of your total misunderstanding of how spam works..

Spam robots targeting @eirthlink.com emails depending on their setup will send emails to pretty much any name/comibation of names and numbers and etc. @eirthlink.com.
That's most likely how u are getting your spam..

That is true as well.

I've gotten email to my home address with all sorts of variations in the CC:

(None of these are my real email btw, just example)

SeolaSassoon1990, SeolaSassoon1999, SeolaSassoon1, SeolaSasson532, SeolaSassoon1983, all followed by @hotmail.com.

Same works with hosters....

SeolaSasson@hotmail, SeolaSasson@gmail, SeolaSassoon@earthlink, SeolaSassoon@msn, etc.

Some put that in the BCC, so you may not even realize that's how it's going.

The more popular name you have, the more spam you'll get.

George, Smith, etc.

Also avoid any dictionary words or names less than 5 characters in length... Once I made the mistake of having AATM@blahblah... Less than 3 minutes after making the account, I had over 20 spams.

It isn't SL selling your email. Chances are they just guessed it.
