download failure

ok so im told i got to download the new version then a box comes up saying i cant because I should visit the download website, which i do, and i download new version succesffully, then i log on again and im told ive got to download and then a box comes up telling me to go to the website so i do and then i log on again and im still told to download and so on....IM STUCK, ive got the new software on my pc ive checked but i CANT GET IN!

Try uninstalling your old version, then searching and removing ALL extraneous files related to SL before downloading and installing the new one. A completely fresh install can solve a lot of issues.

um...how do i find the old version? I go into my programs folder and just see the new version. And if i uninstall the old version wont I lose everything about me? I thought this was an UPDATE, not something that would need complete reinstallation!

I had to download from the main page. Worked just fine then.

I am having the same problem.
It happened last week too, only that was a voluntary update, so by not updating, I was still able to get in. This time, however, it is a forced update, so no way to avoid it, and it is still doing it. So, no way to get in now :/ Guess they will fix it eventually.

Uninstall whatever you've currently got loaded. And, no, you won't lose your account info (inventory, Linden balance, and so on)...it's all stored on Linden Lab's servers. The uninstall won't remove everything belonging to the SL program though, so you really do need to run a search to find the rest of it. Once you delete the extra folders, your viewer preferences will be reset and you'll get little tutorial pop ups for a bit, but that's all.

It SHOULD just be an update, but sometimes information gets corrupted going from one version to another, which is why you want to try deleting everything off before reinstalling.

Wait, how many times did you go around with this? I originally downloaded 1.18.05 and now I see that they have 1.18.06...last minute changes, I guess. I had to download again too.

I had the same problem so I uninstalled the old version and then downloaded new.

As Ann said, uninstalling your older SL version will not cause you to lose anything.

As a matter of fact, several instances where I had issues in world, I was told by Lindens to uninstall and reinstall from the website. Even though many of us residents bitch and moan about the Lindens not caring about losing inventory, I highly doubt they would suggest doing things that would make you lose all your things!

And of course, from doing it, I know that you will not lose a thing, so uninstall and reinstall all day if you want! ;3

Yeah. I got both the download failure and the install failure. It just keeps getting better.

I've had the same problem since last week, although at that time it was voluntary, so I simply didn't update.

You who have succeded with a manual update, did all of you uninstall your old version before downoading the new one?

I had to install with the manual update because I was getting the error message earlier for autorun, but it was during the down time so I couldn't log in yet. When I got home from work tonight and tried to log in, I was prompted to do another mandatory download. This time the auto run did work ok and after installing, I was promptly logged into game with no problems. I didn't uninstall anything.

Download it directly from the downloads page of the website, and after it's in your documents, Run the Install from there. After you do though you will STILL get the message on start-up that a new download is available, IGNORE it and Hit the "Continue" button on that Window.
