i just read an info card that said you get 250$L for starting your account (trial account?), and another 200$L for doing stuff in the orientation island. is this information outdated? because when i started, i got squat! :/

I believe you get 250L for verifying your account with a credit card. Haven't heard about the other 200L for that island stuff.

You only get the starting L$250 if you provide payment info the moment you sign up. It's not used, you don't have to pay anything, but it has to be on record at sign-up for the "bonus" to apply. |

well, when i signed up, it said they'd gimme 2000 (not 200...i think?) lindens to start if i put in my payment information. however, when i went to do that, the 'submit payment information button' was greyed out. thus, i didn't do it.
its a BIT of a crunch to come in here with zero cash and zero income, and have to bootstrap yourself up (especially if i want a 250$L tool for building). i have sunk to sitting in chairs for money, and i now have 48 whole ells.
okay, so that info i read is outdated, and it's normal to get squat to startup. i can deal with that. i'll be grumpy, but i can deal ;)

You get no starting money unless you enter your credit card details when you join, which gives you L$250. It used to be the case that everyone got the starting L$250, but that was also at the time when if you didn't provide credit card details you couldn't join at all, so it was basically the same as it is now.
Even if you don't get the L$250, you can still enter your payment details later on and then buy L$250 for less than US$1, so it's not that much of a loss.
I believe that if you go to one of the new Orientation Islands, you can get (gasp) L$1 there to practice shopping with. You are right, though - items on the old OI used to give out money for completing tasks.
