Million User Mark Reached for Real

Last October witnessed a claim by Linden Lab that they'd reached the one million user mark! Unfortunately, this claim was based on the total number of accounts ever made, and the rest of the MMO industry does not use this standard.

Now, however, we peer at the current statistics, and we see that 1,025,613 users have logged in within the past 30 days. The 30 day cycle is the one used by pretty much the entire multi-player online industry to measure the success of a service, and Linden Lab has finally made their legitimate million user mark.

Note that the actual number of accounts is about eight times the number of users who have logged in in the past 30 days. This means that the churn rate - the percentage of people who try it and leave shortly thereafter - is about 87%. That means about 13% are staying over the entire history of SL on average.

Worlds of Warcraft used to be 20 times the size of SL. Now it's only about eight times the size if you go by the same metrics WoW uses - there's no denying that Linden Lab is finally gaining some ground here.

So let's here it for the first REAL million users!

none of these statistics accounts for alts. In WoW, every account is a paying account, and alts are characters created by the same account. In SL every avatar is an account, so many players have multiple accounts. My best guess is come up with anumber and then divide it by four or five, and that is the actual users. Thus the 1,000,000 users who have logged on over the last 30 days propbaly represent about 250,000 or so actual players.

But Jake, that assumes that there are 4-5 alts per user? How many alts do people have, anyway?

few months back Linden Labs said there were about 1.4 accounts per distinct person.

May be a little less now that its so hard to get a dam name that isnt 13513 numbers in it.

Anyway using the 1.4 number that means we need to get to 1.4 million accounts (logged in in the last 30 days) to hit the 1 million user number.

I've found a ton of good names available.

there is less then 100k premium accounts and soo many people make alts I'm pretty sure there are 1-2 alts per premium that brings the count up to 300k accounts that actually belong to 100K people and its probably more. The free accounts are on the rise its true but having seen some people make alts like water well I would stil not put the total active user number above 250k and I think that's high as well.

If less then 5% of people who sign up for sl actually stay which is another linden lab figure then even using the number on the front page (if it were true) there still would not be 1 million users in SL.

I have one (1) alt. One is useful for a lot of useful purposes, like making sure your product will do for the custome what you want it to do.

My guess is, around 400K or so regular users.
