What's wrong with my avatar?

Her arms look like two stockings full of books. There are polys sticking out at all sorts of weird angles. And when she walks it looks like she has advanced Parkinson's disease.

Is this just normal for SL, or is there something I can do to improve the look of it?

And in addition look for an animation overrider or a walk replacer. It will replace the horrible standard walking animation with something more natural looking.

What the heck is Vertex? My avatar looks like she's stuck her finger in a socket when she walks around sometimes...others say they can't see it but it's driving me crazy!

The "avatar vertex" option in your preferences does good things on some high-end graphic cards, but only affects how you see yourself. It's a client-side effect. Unfortunately, most video cards react badly to this setting, grossly distorting the avatar.

Users of the Poser and DAZ-Studio 3D rendering applications sometimes have a similar issue with Inverse Kinematics options. If IK is turned on, it allows the movement of a hand to move the arm and the rest of the body. Works fine in newer versions of Poser. But in older versions of Poser and in DAZ|Studio, or with some video cards, it looks like the Avatar just barely escaped from a torture chamber.
